Online Examinations. - January 9th 2016, 12:56 AM

Today I had an examination, an online test consisting of twenty questions, some multiple choices, some theory based, some practical based problem questions as well. Regardless, after half an hour of waiting for maintenance from the outside entity running the system, I flew through four questions and then asked to drop everything. Yet another hour passed and finally they decided to postpone the assignment due to technical issues, which is sort of good for me, because I forgot my calculator, and sort of bad for me because I have always hated online examinations.

That hassle could have been avoided if the assignment was paper-based. I woke up late today and rushed across town without breakfast for nothing. I had a large double cheeseburger meal after the examination, which is by no means a balanced breakfast. The final examination is a paper based examination and to prepare, they send us to computer labs.

It is not just exams either, assignments such as essays and presentations are handed in online and marked online, with the remarks made with annotations in an application. Our homework is entirely online, and it is made so much harder, having look up and down hundreds of times to enter calculations, and having to use the D-Pad on a drop down menu to enter accounts, for if you click them, the drop down menu will disappear and you have to enter the accounts again.

What do you think though, are you comfortable with being examined online and does online assessment feature heavily in your country?

I'm taking an online class so of course the exam is online. I'm comfortable with it as long as I've studied beforehand. With technological difficulties usually they at least have thing in place for what to do and while it does suck, it happens. I've had issues happen with paper exams too, like half of it not printing.

I'm comfortable with taking online exams.

However, I don't mind doing paper exams either.

I took a few online classes throughout high school that meant online testing and I didn't mind it. If a technological problem occurred then there was usually a way to continue whether that meant going in or getting more time, etc. For example, in one of my classes I took online, a section of the course where you had to watch videos and answer the questions via a game like setting wouldn't work with Macs so we (anyone who had a Mac) needed to go into my school and use their computers. My math exams were online as well for the last two years of high school.

I feel comfortable taking them as long as I know the material. I don't mind taking paper exams either. In fact, I prefer them for some subjects.

When I was in university, all essays had to be submitted online (sometimes a paper version had to be submitted too). I think I only had 1 online exam. I'm ok having online exams, but I do worry about technical issues or not checking over what I'm submitting. I also prefer the feedback for essays to be on paper rather than on a digital version.
