Hey there,

Having looked online, it seems to be a mixture of practice, playing tournaments, and talking to other people. Do you have a particular team in mind that you want to join? Could you try contacting them?

With regards to making it a career, very few people are lucky to do that. It's a bit like getting rich from youtube- everyone can have a go, but it's very hard work to make a small amount of money. But if you enjoy playing games a lot, you could always look into becoming a games developer as a future career.

Hope this helped a bit!

Hey,

I used to play Counter-Strike: Source competitively for 3 years on a professional team (that is, we got paid and had sponsorship). First of all, getting started is very difficult. It probably took me about a year of playing with 'bad' teams to get into a good team. What worked for me is learning strategies and developing my own. I would sit in servers several hours a day with friends learning where to toss smoke grenades, grenades, etc. I would also watch a lot of professional teams and see how I could improve them.

Once I started doing this I joined up with a team that had decent players, but I became their strategy caller. We ended up going undefeated from a league called caleague (I don't know if they are still around). We went from open through main undefeated. We were then moved into invite and started playing in tournaments and were offered sponsorships.

The way you met with teams back when I played was through mIRC. They had a Counter-Strike lobby where you could 'ring' with teams. It's a great way to meet new people and potentially get into a team. This is how I got into teams that were better. But I think key is making yourself useful by learning strategies and watching games.

The important thing is that you need to treat this like a job if you want to make it. You won't be able to do it part-time, and it sucks the fun out of the game. After 3 years I was burnt out. It's really stressful, especially back then because money in video gaming wasn't as great as it is now. I basically got into it when it started taking off (roughly 10 years ago). The thing is, you need to be able to devote 8-10 hours a day. You'll spend your time in 'practice', scrims, matches, etc. It's a full time gig, not some casual hobby. People in the competitive arena take it seriously. It's not a game.

I'm not familiar with CS:GO, or I'd hook you up with some people, but get mIRC, and ring. Also realize that playing competitively is different than joining a random server. It takes a lot of communication, strategizing, etc. It takes the game to a whole new level.

The other sites I'd take a look at are ESEA, CPL, and CEVO. While I was playing CEVO started taking off, and kind of overran caleague.

Good luck.
