Incredibly anxious and confused for my first job - July 21st 2016, 03:34 AM

My friend and I are 16. We recently got our license, we're getting to that stage where we feel like adults, I guess we want to feel grown up in some ways. Her and I applied at a popcorn shop and surprisingly we got hired on the spot. We were both really excited, I was excited to start making money for myself a bit instead of always asking my parents for money. Well, we started about 4 weeks ago and it has been very stressful. It's not the workload, that I can completely handle. It's the fact that I'm so anxious and confused every day I'm there. We have to make popcorn, ( there's over 40 flavors ) and I'm scared to even use the popcorn machine! I can feel myself sweating from being so scared as it turns on, expecting that I'm going to do something wrong and it will burst into flames. I'm constantly asking other girls what I should do, I hear them laughing and rolling their eyes and I've been called an idiot a few times too. I barely know how to make any of the flavors, run the cash register, it's so stressful and nobody is really showing me how to do it even after I ask and every time I do ask questions I'm treated like I'm so stupid for asking something like that. There's this one girl there who is very rude to my friend and I. She makes me so nervous I mess up on stupid things that I know how to do. I don't know what to do, I really want this job and I'm not going to give up and quit, that I promised myself from the beginning. I work tomorrow and I'm dreading it just because I know I'll make a fool out of myself again. I feel so stupid there, I make so many mistakes and I'm literally confused about everything. One of the owners told me at the end of this month I need to know all of the flavors and everything, but nobody is even really showing me anything? I'm just so stressed out. Has anyone else felt like this?

Perhaps you're at one of those places where the trend is to make fun of the newbies, and the problem is that since some other people have went through the same thing... they now seek to make you feel the same way as they once felt. Just do your best, and remember to keep that spirit you once had, and learn from every mistake you make. It's not the amount of mistakes you make that matters, its what you learn from your experiences that count.

Keep calm, do your best.. and don't look back. Punishing yourself for your mishaps and missteps is only going to push you further backwards. No point dwelling on spilt milk... concentrate on what you can change, and do better and better .

I hope that I helped a little. Best of luck!

Thank you very much, Green Yoshi! Reading your reply gave me a new way to look at this experience, and because of that today actually went a lot better! You're right, I need to stop putting myself down for the mistakes I've made and just focus on improving. Thank you again, your kind words have greatly helped me feel better!

I'm glad I helped. Just keep trying and doing what feels right and eventually you'll get the gist of it Have faith! You're better than you think you are!

The only advice I can really think of, since no one else is willing to show you, is to ask your friend if she can help. Maybe she has a better understanding with how things are done? If worst comes to worst you can speak to your boss. Hopefully he would be willing to help you. Remember to stay calm and don't panic.
