How should I handle this situation? - February 21st 2017, 03:01 PM

Hey everyone,

Someone in my Technical Writing course wanted to proof-read our projects prior to submission. Initially, I was fine with this and told her that would be okay. I contacted the professor to let him know that this was going on (because I've had someone plagiarize my work before). He was fine with it, but then he realized that the other student hasn't been keeping up with her work. He emailed me back and said that I shouldn't send her anything, only make myself available to proofread her information.

How should I inform the other student that I no longer want to exchange material? I don't want to mention anything about the professor because I don't want him to get backlash from the student.

Maybe you could try telling the other student that you already handed the assignment into your professor so you no longer need it to be looked over? You could also say that another student already looked it over. This way you don't have to mention that you talked to your professor about it.

Sorry, let me clarify. She wanted to exchange every assignment for proofreading, and our past assignments to compare for "future" assignments.

That sounds like a tricky situation.

I don't suppose your tutor, or university in general, provides example or past assignments? It would be good if you were able to guide her to other options when letting her know that you don't feel comfortable exchanging essays anymore.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what to suggest than letting her know that you don't feel comfortable with the arrangement as you don't know where your past essays may end up and are worried about plagiarism. You could suggest and alternative (if you want to) where if she is stuck on what to write, she can ask you for help, and you can giver her ideas and such, but not giver her your essays.
