Declining an offer? - March 25th 2017, 07:42 AM

I found out today I was accepted to the Disney College Program (DCP) as a food/beverage employee. I was thrilled about getting accepted however I was tad disappointed about the role I was cast in.

Food/beverage wasn't my top choice role and now that I'm cast in it I'm having second thoughts. Really thinking about it, I'm not sure the role would be a good fit for me personally. I'm not sure it would be something I could succeed in/benefit from.

I am highly considering declining the offer and applying again later for a different role (not just because of the role but also for a multitude of other reasons which I will not get into or we'll be here all day.)

I'm just nervous about having to decline the role. What if I decline now and don't get accepted again? What if this was my only chance and I blew it by saying no? My friend said they were accepted twice and declined twice but rejected the last time they applied.

And everyone is also congratulating me and telling me how wonderful of an opportunity this is. I just don't want to miss out on something that would be wonderful because I was picky, you know?

This program is something I want to do however the role isn't my forte. I'm really at a crossroads about declining the offer for now. What do you guys think?

It sounds like you have a few options here. You could give the program a go and drop out if you don't like it. I've also read that after you complete the program, you can apply for another role or internship that is closer to what you are interested in.

I do understand that if food and beverage wasn't your top choice, it can be tempting to decline the offer, especially if you have other reasons (feel free to elaborate!) I don't know much about the DCP or how it works, but I don't think you'll be penalised for declining and applying later on. Situations can change so I don't think that should go against you.

Other people may have ideas of what getting accepted into the DCP is like and may have their own opinions on things. But it's you that will be working there. Perhaps you can come with a list of pros and cons, or see if you can find information on what the DCP is like, and in particular, the role of food and beverage, to help you make a decision?

If you're having doubts about regretting it, just do it. It'll get your foot in the door. Just because you got this role, doesn't mean you're locked into that role the rest of your life.
