Future careers / course opportunites - June 20th 2017, 11:47 AM

I just finished my first year at college, where I am currently studying Level 3 Extended Diploma Animal Management. I've really enjoyed it and got a really good overall grade (triple Distinction* ). Although I still have one year left, I want to look at future courses/potential careers. I have taken an interest in sheepdog handling and training, but I can't seem to find any courses available in my area. My current college has an Agriculture course, which I was considering, but what put me off was apparently the college courses are changing from coursework to exams. I struggled with my GCSEs so I would prefer a coursework. I'll continue searching for shepherding/sheepdog courses, but any advice is appreciated.

It's great that you are researching before taking the next step, even if you have another year to go yet!

Sheepdog handling and training is rather specific and this can mean that you may have trouble finding relevant courses and careers. I'm wondering whether you have thought about other careers that may be similar? Perhaps a dog handler for the police/army, an assistance dog trainer, a search and rescue dog handler, or even a pet behaviour counsellor. It's good to keep your options open!

You may also want to look into apprenticeships and see whether there are any relevant to you in your area. You work and learn at the same time, and get assessed by what you do rather than exams. Also, you may want to look at university courses too and see if there is anything that interests you. Even though you don't like exams much, you are doing well with your diploma and could meet the entry requirements to study at university.

While it may seem early days yet, it's good that you are thinking about the future. Perhaps you can talk to your teachers and friends and see what other options there might be? Don't rule out the agriculture course either- if it's something you are interested in, then don't be put off by the potential changes regarding coursework and exams. Your teachers are there to help you through the exams, and you may find that you perform better in a subject that you are passionate about

I have thought of other careers such as wildlife rehabilitation or working in a boarding kennel. I recently spoke to a guy from my college (who is on the same course as me) who mentioned that he was going to do a sheepdog handling course, so I know that they do exist, but for some reason I didn't ask him where he was doing the course. I have looked at university but I decided it wasn't really for me. I'm not adverse to apprenticeships but I would have to look into it a bit more. I may still consider the agriculture course, but I will think about that nearer the time. In the meantime, I will do some more research. Thank you for your advice.

I don't have much to say about other courses you can take, however, looking for online classes could be another option for finding classes.

Best of Luck!
