Job - January 7th 2019, 11:27 PM

Okay, so, my sister and I both applied to a restaurant/bar, and she had an interview today but the person that interviewed her asked her but maybe three questions about herself and the rest about me. I wasn't even there. This person also asked her if she was still living at home - I thought in job interviews personal questions like that were not allowed in America? They didn't even ask her if she had any questions. Are they more interested in me than her? But still I do not think that that is allowed. I had no interview yet.

It's illegal for them to ask you things that they can use to discriminate against you. Like your age, race, sexual orientation, disability status, marital status, whether or not you are pregnant or planning to be, etc. But a lot of interviewers aren't aware of the less obvious ones and ask them anyway.
You can refuse to answer, but it will make you look bad. I don't think who you live with is technically illegal, but it is rude and it has nothing to do with her ability to do the job. Maybe they were trying to sort of use her as a reference for you since she was there and it was easy. Either way, it sounds like they aren't very good at doing interviews.

Not only that, but I believe your sister is under the drinking age. So she would be unable to serve alcohol from the bar. If that's what her interview was for, then it was completely pointless. It doesn't make it right for them to do what they did, though.

Those kinds of questions definitely raise some red flags, in my opinion. Although they may not have been illegal (I'm honestly not sure), your sister's interview should have been focused on her, and it's not appropriate to ask about an applicant's living situation. If either of you gets the position, I would be wary of working for them and definitely look into the situation carefully before saying yes!

The age to sell/serve alcohol in Ohio is 19 (except wine and spirits is 21)

But I would hesitate to accept any offer from them. If they are this bad at interviewing, the business may be run the same way.

Re: Job - January 9th 2019, 08:42 PM

Alright, so, apparently the guy that interviewed her is new at his job. My case manager works there too and she said that he was a nice guy, and that he just puts on a tough front. They are having two hosts leave so my case manager said that she could probably get both of us in those spots. My sister is nineteen, so she is of the legal age to serve alcohol As I do live in Ohio. Otherwise on the application they would not have let her continue with it. However, we do both look younger than we actually are xD I always get mistaken for 21 and her 16.
