Which course? - May 31st 2009, 03:56 PM

Next year I am doing a Btec course (which for those who don't know is like a cross between vocational and academic, and its at A level level) I have picked to do health and social care, but there are two courses, either social care or health sciences. Originally, I picked social care, but some people have said to me that because I want to be a pediatric nurse or midwife health sciences would be better. But that is more biology based, and I really struggled doing A level biology, because of the biochemistry level, what should I do?

Hi Angela,

Well I think that people might be right and that the science one might be more suited to the career you want to do. I can't say for sure though so maybe it would be best if you talked to your teacher, head of year or a careers advisor in your school because they could tell you what the best option would be. Another thing you could do would be get in touch with connexions direct (you can talk to them online or on the phone etc) because they are a careers service in the UK and they have the best advice really.

I hope this helps
Jen

One of the problems I have been having is that I am not in school or college this year, so I don't have any of that sort of person to talk to.

Hey Angela,

I did a BTEC national diploma in health and social care. A few people who were on my course went on to do midwifery and others did nursing or social work. It is up to you what you choose. Perhaps contact the college and ask them what they think? But it is possible to get into midwifery through the course I did. If you want to know anything about the course then you are more than welcome to ask me :-)

If you have a few college(s) or universit(ies) in mind, then you could contact them and see what their requirements are. I'd say that health sciences would be more suitable, however, if you can get into the program you like with only social science, which you may find easier and presumably get a higher mark in, then go for that one. But don't choose without contacting the places you wish to apply to in the event that you choose social science and it's not accepted.
