i need some advice! - June 16th 2009, 07:22 PM

i'm soooo confused about what to do next year and i could use some advice.

basically, i have two options about where to go for sixth form.

a) stay at my current school; a small private school where i have been since year 7.

up sides - they know my situation and accept that i can only be in school when i'm well enough and the teachers are very supportive.

down sides - for 2, possibly three of my subjects i might well be the only person studying them. seeing as one of those subjects is drama i really don't know how thats going to work, seeing as you kinda need more than one person to do drama.
- it's a very small sixth from;; around 20 people in each year.
- doesn't have a good careers or guidance department
- doesn't offer one of the subjects i want to do

b) sixth form college

up sides - loads of my friends are going there
- big year group, very social
- gets great results
- lots of extracurricular opportunities

down sides - big class sizes
- don't know how easy it would be to catch up with stuff i'd missed due to illness.

up until a few weeks ago i hadn't even considered going to college and just assumed that i'd be staying at my current school. but now i'm thinking that i really want to go to the college.

i've been at my current school for 5 years and i've kinda has enough of it to be honest.

my medical situation is something that i know i have to consider when thinking about where to go. the college doesn't yet know about it, but i will let them know before the induction day which i plan on going to in early july.

i'm going to be missing quite a bit of school for the first few months, but then i should be back to full etendance before christmas or just after new years. [assuming i don't have a relapse.]

so.. any advice? i'm so confused about what to do.

i'm wondering about the differences between college and school?.

I am so ignorant about how the school systems work in the UK...like 6 form means nothing to me.

But, I would say that all teachers/staff will probably be supportive of your illness, no matter what school you go to.

cheers

Why don't you ask them at the college what they would given your medical circumstances do before committing to go there?

In North American colleges and universities, there are various places to go if you are suffering from some disorder or illness that can impede your learning severely. I'm sure that the 6th form in the UK would have this also. Generally, you get acknowledged for having whatever it is and you alert the professors of your status. You may also be able to get lecture notes from other classmates.

You may also have course information online, so if need be, you can download it while you're away and along with reading, you won't be entirely clueless once you return.

Look around at the ones you'll apply to and see if your disability is covered.

It seems ridiculuous to me that they'd have a course with approx. 1 person in it. Even a class of 5 seems ridiculous, especially if it's for drama.

i contacted the college and they said they have lots of clinics and revision/catchup sessions for people like me who will be missing some chunks of school.

argh. i don't know what to do.

i'm swaying towards college, likee 70:30 i think.

I think you should give college a shot, then, too.

I know your situation is different to mine, but i went to a very small private school (which was also all girls) from year 3 to the end of school and i wish more than anything i had left for 6th form

the year was too small, there wasn't enough guidance it was just awful, but up until then it had been a great school

so personally i would really consider college but thats just me

pm if you want
