How do you get rid of stage fright? - January 17th 2009, 12:32 PM

In my gym class we have to get in groups and make up a dance and then show it infront of the whole class. My problem is that I have stage fright and I laugh and get really nerves. How do I get rid of the stage fright so I don't laugh and make our group get a D?

try building your confidence by practicing in a small group, maybe just your friends, then when you feel comfortable gradually let the group get bigger?

Confronting your fears will help.

I don't do a lot of dance, but I have done one hell of a lot plays. I always just did last minute rehearsals, and then took really really deep breaths. I also always tried to forget that the audience was there. My final drama peice las year was just the worst for nerves, I got an A on it, but at one point I was in freeeze frame tied up to the desk, and I was looking down at my legs and realised that they were shaking! So we do all get nervous, just try and ignore them as much as possible!

I do singing (both in groups and solo) and my stage fright has always been a major problem. I've found that it helps to acknowledge that you have nerves, but be determined to overcome them.
Sometimes it helps to talk to yourself, and reassure yourself that "Hey, I'm nervous, but so what? It's not gonna get the better of me - I'm going to do my best no matter what."

Ive always had it as well, I dont think you can get rid of it... well I havent.
But I learnt to deal with it by just practising (my instrument) until I knew it really really well.
I then thought to myself even if I do a few things wrong it will still be good just not quite perfect and just trying to be confident that I knew what I was doing and the people watch didnt.

I think it comes down to practising until you are confident that you can do whatever you have to play without having to put effort or think or concentrate too much and then when it comes to it putting a lot of effort behind it.

I can sympathise as i do A level drama and although its my thrid year because i did two years of it for GCSE aswell and i still have stage fright too.
But i think deep breaths help and ive heard its best to think to yourself "whats the worst that could happen" and you realise not much could really go wrong so just do your best and enjoy it

i'm always scared of performing on my musical instruments in front of people, and it REALLY gets me down. I daren't even practice when my mum's in the house.

Face the fear. Go up on the stage and practice, getting a bigger stage and a bigger audience.

one thing you can do, whether you're acting, or dancing, is basically to get into character. you aren't you, you're the dancer. think, who will be dancing this? say that it's a fairy (i know it's lame, but it's all i can think of), then you aren't a teenage girl dancing in gym class, you're a fairy doing her dance. you don't get stage fright during regular life, why should your character get stage fright during theirs?

Not sure of any practice things you can do other than what everyone else said,
but trying keeping this in mind,
almost everyone that's watching you either has stage fright or is just getting over it,
middle school is usually where it starts to show and later on starts to wear off, at least it did for me,
just remember that everyone there is equal to you, noone is better and has any reason to laugh or think badly just because you have a nervous tick,
on that matter just about everyone in my 10th grade english class does,
you're not some anomale or something
