Question going back to school :| - July 12th 2009, 11:54 AM

Okay, so this may be triggering, i dont think so, but could be. (Suicide).

Thing is wednesday i overdosed at school. few hours later, teachers rang an ambulnace to take me to hospital, and people saw. Everyone in my year knows, and im shit scared.

I know people are going to be like 'Did you try and kill yourself'?, and i have no idea what im meant to say back. Im scares its going to break me. How do i handle going back and what they are going to say?

Thankkkyou :]

Hey Jess,

I don't think there's a right or wrong thing to say back. It's up to you and what you feel comfortable with. If you want people to know about your attempt, then you could be honest with them and let them know that you're having some trouble with suicidal thoughts. If you don't want them to know, you can simply say, "I'd rather not get into it right now" and change the subject. You can also thank them for their concern--something like, "Thanks so much for asking, I really appreciate it. Right now, though, I'd rather talk about something else". That way you let them know that you appreciate them caring, but you don't have to have that conversation.

Good luck--I'll be thinking of you.

I definitely agree with what Jen said.

I personally think you're brave for going back into school after what's happened. I think that the first couple of days of being back might be a bit tough at first, but in time it will get easier. I know the feeling of being so scared to go back to school, but I think the longer you put something off the harder it gets.

It's up to you what you say back to people if they say questions. They cannot force you to say anything; it's up to you what you say. Say what you're comfortable with. If you don't want to answer questions what Jen suggested was good. Say something like you'd rather not talk about it at the moment, but that you appreciate them caring. You then may want to change the topic.

Hey Jess,

just had to reply because something really similar happened to me. I overdosed at school too and ambulance had to come in to take me to hospital, but I kicked up a huge fuss and refused to go with them, but anyway, youíre not the first person for this to happen to and you certainly wonít be the last. I know what its like to be the subject of gossip, itís horrible but the reality of school is soon enough youíll be old news and something else will be making its rounds. I know thatís no consolation right now but I think hopefully youíll find that the people that approach you (that is if they do at all) are going to be coming to speak to you out of concern rather then anything else.

Thatís another thing, I think youíll be pleasantly surprised at how few people come and speak to you about it, people probably wonít know what to say and how to approach the subject with you therefore will avoid the subject altogether.

If people do ask you questions answer in the way you are comfortable, maybe before you go back to school tomorrow you could plan your answer and responses ready for if people come and talk to you about it. What do you think youíll be happy responding with? Maybe something like you are just having a few problems at the moment, or that itís a private issue, people often do respect your privacy you know

I really hope tomorrow goes okay for you Jess, let me know how it goes for you wonít you? Always here if you need some extra support, take care.

Hey Jess,

Well I just wanted to add my thoughts to this. Obviously its your choice whether or not you want people to know. If you did want to tell the truth just try and tell the truth perhaps? So, if they asked you if you tried to kill yourself (and you wanted to tell the truth) just say "yes". If you didnt want to people to know though, and this is perfectly understandable, then you could say something like "oh its a long story, it doesnt really matter". Most people will get the hint to be honest and just leave it. You could also just do a quick subject change . I guess you could even just say "I was just feeling really ill".

Hope this helps,

Well you should've thought of what would have happened before you did it. But if you're too scared, then just tell them your doctor gave you some new meds and you had an allergic reaction to it or something along those lines. But I'm sure many would start the rumour that you did try to kill yourself or they'd figure it out anyways. So you might as well just live with what you did and tell them when they ask.
