Tips On Buying A Car! Help. - July 15th 2009, 01:27 AM

Not so sure if this is the right spot.

I'm probably buying a car in another city... A 1991 Toyota Corolla 127,000 miles and supposedly everything works... He said he'd sell it for 1000$ I kind of scared. I don't want to get ripped off. Of course we're going to take it for a spin and everything, but is there anything that they can conceal?

Tips on buying a car from someone, help. I could mess this up bad.

Hello Holly,
My father always told me not to buy a car with over 100,000 miles on it... but also ask the owner why he is selling it??
Is he the first owner?
I mean 1000 is a good price, but just make sure you don't get ripped off.
Go to the bule book website and there you can put the CARFAX, its a number that shows all the car history...

Good luck!

The price range for the car in itself is up to 1200... He is selling it for 1000.

Definitely take a check list with you like one of these:

http://www.life123.com/career-money/...hecklist.shtml

You may not understand exactly what you are looking for half the time, but they will know you mean business and hopefully won’t rip you off. Plus some of these things I would never think to check. I used one of these before when car shopping, they can be really helpful.
And like someone else suggested, get the CarFax on the car before buying it.

Hey Holly!

$1,000 is a great price, but usually, when someone sells something that low, they do it for a reason. Have a mechanic check it out and make sure that, even if it's not having issues now, that it won't have issues later on. Get a Carfax report. In full. Yes, you can get the free one, but it doesn't show anything - repairs, accidents, how many owners, etc. For $14.99, you can get all of that and really make a good decision that could end up saving you money.

Good luck!
Em

personally i wouldn't buy a car with 127,000 miles on the clock.. but if you are gunna go ahead with it, get someone to check it out before you hand over any money. he might well say everythings in working order but that doesn't mean it is.

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

My husband has a little knowledge of cars (He gets it from his dad.)

He says that he wouldn't pay any more than $500 for it, depending on rust, and brakes.

He also says that if the brakes feel "spongey" or if the E-brake doesn't work, it's not going to be a good / safe buy.

Key places to look for rust are around the doors, along the front of the hood, and under the car. You also want to make sure that the brake Rotors aren't too rusty.

In addition to the brakes, check the brake lines under the car, as well as the fuel lines for leaks. Inquire as to how new the belts in the engine are, how recently the oil was changed, and if the fuel pump is new or not.

You should also google for any factory recalls on this vehicle's year and make. If he thinks of anything more, I'll PM the information over to you.

Don't act happy or enthusiastic that you are buying it. That is all I know about buying cars.
