16 years old and I can't seem to find a job... - July 20th 2009, 08:07 PM

I am 16 and I started looking for a summer job in April and so far nothing. Not even a call back for an interview. I have applied many places including:

Movie theater
Ice cream shops
Arcades
Fast food such as-
Arbys
Taco Bell
Mcdonalds
Subway
Restaurants as buss girls/hostesses
A photography studio
A library

I can't apply at pizza paces because they will not hire under 18. The photography studio wanted to call me in for an interview but they didn't because I have no experience, they told me to get a job at a fast food place or something to get experience and then apply again. I had one interview at taco bell and that was because it was an open interview (Anyone who came in that day got an interview)....

I can't mow lawns as we don't have a lawn mower
I have tried babysitting MANY times and nobody again has even called me back (I put up flyers...)
You can't even get a paper route in my city until you are 18.

I mean I don't get it. I fill out my applications honestly. I have my parents check them to make sure for spelling erros... I write neat. I mean I get good grades, I am sure my references would have good things to say about me...

I am frustrated... Anyone have any advice?? Thanks!!

The only advice is to keep applying and applying. It's a horrible cycle, you need experience to get a job, and you need a job for experience. My only other advice is to volunteer in a charity shop, which will give you experience and hopefully after a little while will mean you can get a paying job. Employers just don't want to train people, they'd rather hire people who know what to do already, and although that sucks, its just what happens. So keep applying, and something will come up eventually.

You have tried the 'simple' options...like babysitting, and delivering leaflets?

What about a voluntary job to start you off and to give you some experiance...then the more experiance you get the easier it will be to get a paid job.

All I can say is, keep applying, Dont let anything stop you. You will get a job eventually, even if its crapp, you will climb the ladder.

I am in the same situation as you. It is very difficult to find a job now. I have been told I am over qualified for fast food jobs. I am a qualified life guard but any job wants experience. i have just applied for 4 jobs all in a new hilton hotel opening in my area so be on the look out for new opening corporations.

My plan now is to do volunteer work in a hospital and they have said after 100 hours I can get an interview for a job. I have been told practically all volunteers get a job because they are known and liked within the hospital. I plan on doing my 100 hours over the summer and then getting a job when I am back in school. The volunteer work also looks great on university applications

Most places want volunteers. It is best to pick something you are interested in or want a career in.
  • Hospitals
  • Animal Shelter
  • Charity shops
  • Churches
  • Sports clubs
  • Homeless shelters
  • Community centers
  • Senior centers
and a lot of others.

I noticed you are in America and I found this website: http://www.voa.org/Services/tabid/2853/Default.aspx

Keep applying, I know its hard because everyone wants experiance but how do you gain experiance if no one will hire you. Keep going for it, maybe even try out volunteering and from there you can get more refrences that you're a hard worker and people can see that you're serious about working.

I worked at a pizzeria before, and now I'm working another one. You CAN get hired at a pizza place, you just can't work ovens and such. I worked at Taco Bell, too. I actually liked Taco Bell. It's pretty much about keeping customers happy and getting your job done fast. I would recommend the place. So... My take on all this... Yes. You're going to have to go for fast food. It's not that bad, but you're 16. You have to start somewhere.
