That is an interesting question. I am sorry that happened to you; getting money taken away can really suck.

I was wondering why they took it away? Was there a reason behind it? If there is no reason behind it and they took it away so they would have extra cash I think you should talk to your grandparents about it. I know it might be a hard thing to do but your grandparents could probably try to talk to your parents and ask them/tell them to give you the money back.

Best of luck,

Jenna

No they haven't. It's just that it is MY money which I earned from doing well in my exams.
And they're refusing to let me spend it. I've been saving up for at least a month and the won't let me get the new Call of Duty!
I earned the money, and I can spend it if I want to.

I don't honestly think laws come into this, to be honest.
They're your parents, they're just trying to protect your money and make sure you save it up sensibly.

Talk to them again about it. Maturely. [:

The problem is, I have talked to them maturely.
It's 45, and I have 25, and jamie has 15, so we've agreed we'll pay for it together.
It's a good idea!
And we've been saving up since forever.

to be honest.. they can pretty much do what they want when it comes to taking away your money. perhaps they're taking it to save it up for you?. my mum kinda does that.. excpet she doesn't take the money, i give it to her.. because i know if it's in my bank i'll probably spend it.

I'm not sure how they can. it's mine, it doesn't belong to them.
I get pissed off at this, so I normally just buy what I wanted then walk up to them and hand them the money. Might have to do it again.

You're underage so technically everything of yours belongs to them. So yes.

They're your parents. You're 13. They have complete control over your finances. They feed you and shelter you. I'm pretty sure they can take 25 pound from you. I'm fairly positive you won't find a law against it.

I guess you'll just have to accept it, since talking to them hasn't worked. There's not much else you can do.

..just don't go behind their backs and buy something they've told you not to buy.

That'll be a big shame, because I'm buying it anyway.
I earned it, I'm keeping it.

Is the reason because they don't want you buying that particular game? Because if I remember correctly it's rated M, at least in the states. And although I have no issues with someone a little younger playing, I can understand why they wouldn't want you to.

Its not really a legal issue to be honest. They are trying to look out for you, and if you go out your way to buy it, you're not going to earn any respect from them

They can because you are a child. They are acting in your best interests.

If you are trying to prove yourself as a responsible young adult rather than a child, buying something they've specifically told you not to is not the way to go about it. This actually highlights your youth.

Re: Can my parents... - October 5th 2009, 09:47 PM

The problem is: they know I'm mature enough for the M rating. I'm not in the slightest phased by it, and I have no problems with them. Rating isn't the problem.
The problem is that I've had a history of not saving up, and just spending all in one go.
But I've been saving up for at least a month, maybe 2, for this one game, and I haven't bought ANYTHING in at least 3.
I've proved to them that I CAN save up, and be responsible with my money, and I only get the response "Well Jamie is always changing his mind, yesterday he wanted some Warhammer."
Well:

a. that's him.
b. this way we save money, as Warhammer costs a fortune!

Re: Can my parents... - October 6th 2009, 04:32 AM

Technically, since you are a minor and since they are your parents, they have legal custody of you. This isn't something I'd consider to be worth bringing lawyers into but your parents in a sense own you. Consider this, if you do something that may be illegal, then there may be a fine involved. You don't pay the fine legally, they do (ignoring the potential that you'll go to juvy).

As for buying the game, if the laws are like it is here in Canada, since it's M-rated and since you're 13, legally you're not allowed to get it. That doesn't mean that the employees won't sell it to you, some may but then again, some may want to see your age on I.D. and even though you could have the money (assuming it's not taken away), you still couldn't get it.

Now I'll approach it from your angle. You want to show them you can be responsible and that's good of you. The problem is, what will happen if you actually end up buying it? You've shown that you're not responsible and that you don't respect what your parents say. That's not going to go well with your parents and all your attempts to save the money up will have gone to waste because they will trust you even less than they currently do. Added to that, they may demand that you return the game as part of a punishment for going behind their backs and so now you're really crammed in the shitter. However, assuming they let you keep the game, they're going to remember how you defied them, how you disrespected them, how you were so compelled by greed that you'd do whatever you have to in order to get the game and so forth. That's going to harm you whenever you want to get something else because they'll bring it up as evidence that you really cannot be trusted and it'd be one more reason to take the money away from you.

Think in the long-term, not in the short-term.

In England, it's only illegal to sell it to an under-18.
I suppose I could "ask nicely" although this is a special case.
I'll ask after school, and see how it goes.

How is it a special case? I can see why they'd want you to save a little longer than three months, because three months honestly is not that long.
But really, I don't think it could be put any better than YourNightmare put it.

Re: Can my parents... - October 6th 2009, 03:32 PM

Three months: I need 40 and I get about 3 a week. That's 12 a month, 3 months is 36, and I needed to do a few extra chores to get the extra 7 (3 postage)
I've decided that I won't go behind their backs and buy it anyway.
And I've only done it once anyway, and it was a Dummys Guide to CSS because I needed it.
She's thinking about it.
EDIT: She said I could get it, woot! Haven't got anything new in months, was getting rather bored with my 5 old games :P

I'm glad you managed to get your game. You must have shown your mum how you can be responsible, good on you.
I'll close this now since you have warhammer, I hope you enjoy it.
