I just did a quick search on the NHS jobs site, if you look there you can search the jobs and see the starting wage and also see what the wage will be after a few years of working.

Psychiatrists usually earn between 40000(when they first start) and 70000(once they're a senior). However if you go into private it came be up to 120000

Psychologists earn around 40000 and 70000 aswell but like before if you go into private practise you can pretty much charge what you want.

http://www.connexions-direct.com/Jobs4u/ gives exact values.

There's a children's mental health unit near me and they were advertising for jobs with starting salaries at between 30000 and 40000 ... but you have to do masters / doctorate in psychology first I think. It's what I wanna do too!

Please remember that psychology is a 3 year degree that is relatively easy to get into and psychiatry demands a 5 year medical degree that 70% applicants get rejected from before 7-10 years of specialising before you even get to be a psychiatrist. So if you're trying to decide between the two, psychology is about 23482349834 times easier.

But you should also bare in mind that for both courses you will have to complete occupational health checks and you're defintley unlikely to be successful in achieving a place for medicine if you're having ongoing mental health difficulties that are affecting your life in the way your anxiety and social phobia is. Ability to communicate and socialise is a major factor that they look for when selecting people for places at medical school.

In North America, and I'm assuming the same in England, there are different types of psychologists and each type would earn different amounts. Some focus exclusively on research or clinical work and within each of those domains, the various branches would get different pays, such as neuropsychology vs. forensic psychology vs. child psychology and so forth.

If you find the website in dollars, then just use an online converter: http://www.xe.com/ucc/

If you go for private practice, you have the advantage of charging however much you want but the disadvantage of having to pay utilities, advertising and such for it. If you go for a hospital setting, then you don't have to pay for any utilities and such but you cannot charge any rate you want. Generally though, hospital or government settings may allow for more pay although it varies on the actual location and status. If you join a current private practice so you don't have to start one up, then you may earn more.

A counsellor is going to earn far less than the average psychologist or psychiatrist and need less education.

Also keep in mind that the amount you earn also depends on where you work. While you may have a base degree, your place of employment can adjust your pay as they see fit.
