This Stupid English Paper - October 15th 2009, 03:28 PM

Hey,
So this post is half rant and half asking for advice. Yesterday I got my first C on a paper. Ever! In fact, it was my first anything but A. I have always been a little bit of an overachiever so this was really a shock. There were really big content errors in my paper, big enough for him to mark some categories half credit. This upsets me even more because I went in to conference with my professor about this paper and he told me my draft was fine! I asked him if the content was good and he seemed really pleased with it. I fixed the minor problems and turned it in thinking that he had pretty much told me already that it was fine. I am honestly not sure what to do about this. I am going to meet with him today so that I can do better on the project that I have going on right now. I just feel like he flat our lied to me. I know that I would have done better if he hadnt told me that other than those minor things it was fine. I just feel like it was really underhanded. What would you guys do? Is there a good way to handle the situation because I am paying too much for my college education to let it go.

Talk to him about it. It sounds like the upcoming meeting is about a different project, so I don't know if there will be time then or if you'll have to set up another meeting, but definitely ask him directly about it. If he gives you a BS/unhelpful answer, you'll just have to work a lot harder on the next paper and then be a little obnoxious when you meet with him about it (as in, be aggressive about saying 'are you sure I shouldn't change anything?)

Good luck! And don't feel bad about getting a C There are a lot of people who wish a C would come as a shock... Maybe it just means you'll learn a lot in his class b/c he'll challenge you.

This is a really common issue with Professors. If you meet with him again, ask him why you got the C. He should be able to explain why you got that particular grade. Try not to get angry or short with him.

Realize, even though you meet with them, most Professors will NOT take apart your paper. They'll give you minor bits of advice and tell you whether it's "good" or not, but that is usually about it. Don't take this as "it's good to turn in", usually they just mean it's good for being a draft. I made this mistake and it cost me a good grade in most of my English classes.

You are much better off going to your colleges writing center/tutoring service, if they have that available. Students critiquing your paper will be more in depth about the quality of your paper.
