UCAS 2010 - October 22nd 2009, 04:37 PM

I know there are a few others out there applying!!

I've applied to four Universities for medicine and Manchester for medical biochemistry as a back up.

Got an interview at Manchester on November 11th
But they've asked me to write a second personal statement saying why I want to do medical biochemistry, as my original was all about medicine. Lol, literally "I have decided no other course would suit me". Get to interview - well clearly I meant appart from medical biochemistry

Not heard anything from the others yet.

How about anyone else? Sent it off yet, etc?

Re: UCAS 2010 - October 22nd 2009, 05:30 PM

I am applying for Diagnostic Radiography in 4 different Uni's.

I haven't sent mine off yet. I need to complete my personal statement which is stressing me out. Other than my personal statement I have done everything.
My school isn't great, not many people go to Uni from there so they don't know how to deal with applications and personal statements very well.

I have until the January deadline and I plan to send it off by the end of November at the latest. (I set myself the personal deadline of the end of October but my school has really let me down)

I really don't think I am going to get the grade I need in Maths, so I have found a foundation degree I can do if I don't get on to Diagnostic Radiography. I would rather do an extra year in Uni than do an extra year in 6th form resitting maths.

Re: UCAS 2010 - October 22nd 2009, 06:23 PM

I started this week, thankfully our school is great with it and has assigned every student with a member of the support and guidance team as a 'UCAS Tutor' so they'll help us to fill everything out, improve things etc.
Unfortunately I have my heart set on Social Work at Strathclyde University whilst doing Counselling at College so if I don't get that I'm kinda screwed =]

good luck everyone!

I'm finding it really challenging to write a personal statement about something I don't really want to do

... Did you even read my first post?!

It's my back up option. I've applied to do four medicine, one medical biochemistry. I've got an interview for medical biochemistry next week, and as my original personal statement was all about medicine they want a second personal statement. Of course I don't want to go to my back up course, that's why it's called "back up".

...

I've done approaching 3,000 words now. I think the main reason I'm struggling to find things to write about is because all my activities and work experience (even my job!) are related to medicine and so completely irrelivant to medical biochemistry. At least it's not going to be like on a computer and it's nearly 40 lines. Hopefully I'll be able to pad it out a bit with some random stuff. Given up for tonight.

Re: UCAS 2010 - November 2nd 2009, 07:22 PM

My personal statement is way too long. I have waffled on so much but I am not to worried as it is only my first draft (It is actually like my 5th draft but this is the first finished drafts, I gave up in the others after the first few paragraphs).
So now I need to cut some bits out which shouldn't be too difficult because I have repeated myself a few times too. I also need to restructure it a and change some bits that make no sense. Then I might start letting people read it. I need to write a better conclusion too.

I am still so stressed out but now I have my first draft down I feel a bit better.

My back up foundation course is annoying me too as it is a paper application form and is asking me some of the stupidest things and there isn't enough space for my qualifications, it won't even fit in my GCSE's never mind AS levels. I'm going to have to phone them and ask if I am doing this right.

Re: UCAS 2010 - November 2nd 2009, 07:41 PM

I sent mine off for Psychology a few weeks ago to UEA, Sussex, Leeds, Portsmouth and Psychology and Linguistics at Edinburgh.
Urgh I hope I don't have to interview at Edinburgh. Mainly because it's SO far away, other end of the country!!
My personal statement deleted itself off my laptop and it had taken me like 3 weeks to perfect. So I typed up what I could remember and sent it to my old school careers officer and she basically filled it out for me.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

You have just as much chance as anyone else applying.
If you really want this you will get there, it may take longer but you will do it. Also if you don't get on it isn't the end of the world, there are other way of doing it.

My brother is currently in his second year of Medicine and he is 22. He got a C in chemistry which stopped him getting in so he did a 3 year degree called Life Sciences Applicable to Medicine and is now doing postgraduate Medicine in Warwick. He didn't get in the first time around but he didn't let it put him off and if anything it made him more determined.

Try to stay positive and confident and I am sure you will do great in life no matter what.

^ Thank you Rach am trying to stay optimistic!

Anyway interviewed today and got an offer of AAB from Manchester to do medical biochemistry.
mixed reactions - nice to have an offer, but it's not a back up and I won't be using it as if I get AAB and no medical offers I'll be taking a gap year and trying for medicine again. Was expecting an ABB offer which would have been slightly more effective as a back up plan!
