I'm having a lot of trouble with two chapters in my matrix algebra class, as the professor just skimmed over it, and the book isn't all that detailed either. I just don't know what the questions are asking, and so I have no idea how to go about solving them. I have a couple that I have no idea what to do:

1. Let x = (x1, x2), v1=(-2, 5) and v2 = (7, -3), and let T: R2 --> R2 be a linear transformation that maps x into x1v1 + x2v2. Find a matrix A such that T(x) is Ax for each x.

2. T: R2 --> R2 is a horizontal shear transformation that leaves e1 unchanged and maps e2 into e2 + 3e1. Find the standard matrix of T.
