AP Calc. - November 20th 2009, 12:17 AM

Am I the only one who doesn't understand this stuff? Our teacher doesn't really do anything, if you ask her for help she always says, "Figure it out." What the...? Isn't se SUPPOSED to help her students? Almost ALL of the kids in my class are failing because nobody understands what we are doing! Eeep! We have final exams in almost 3 days!

What do I do?

My teacher doesn't care about my class either! Calculus is hard...it's pretty effed up when you deal with letters more than you do numbers. My sympathies =)

Having a bad teacher can definitely make calculus difficult. There are quite a few web resources for learning this type of material. Here is a link to the first class in calculus I from a university:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbIQW0gkgxo

In their playlist, they have every lecture from the entire course of calculus I, actually. I've only seen a couple of their videos from the various courses, but I've found them to be very understandable. Anything is better than having a teacher that isn't willing to help.

There's definitely a lot of videos from their course, which would take too much time, but even just watching a couple would be very beneficial, I think.

Re: AP Calc. - November 21st 2009, 10:03 PM

AP courses usually are designed to have the student experience what 1st-year university may be like and so it seems appropriate to me that the teacher doesn't hold your hand as much. With that said, the teacher must explain the material properly to the students and try to answer questions without giving away the answer. At least that's what my high-school AP calculus teacher would do, he'd teach the material very well and when it came to answering questions for us, he'd sort of try to lay a trail of breadcrumbs for us to try to find and follow. Also, he'd want to see we tried to answer the questions otherwise he wouldn't lift a finger. To me that seems fair.

For your situation though, if the entire class is failing then the teacher should realize that it's time to do something and teach better to the students. The problem of course is that the teacher may think their teaching is effective but the students aren't effective and so it should be their duty to figure it out. That view I don't care for because it's obvious that the students aren't grasping the material and so the teacher should try to explain it with breadcrumbs.

Lol, I took AP Calculus online. Terrible decision.

Check out your after school academic programs and see if there's any sort of math ICU (which is what our school called "math extra help after school" in a more sophisticated manner) and see if you might be able to spend some time getting to know the teachers (and the material, obvi.) there! [:

Good luckkk!

I love Calculus to death; favorite class ever. Pity your teacher sounds so unhelpful >_<

As the dude above said, feel free to message me anytime if you need help with it.
