I really hate marks - January 6th 2010, 11:21 AM

So right now, I'm in the 5th class (in America, this is Junior, in England, I think it's the 11th form). Next year is my last year of secundary school. I live in Belgium and our marks-system is a bit apart from the english and american school-system.
So we only have marks with points in %. For one course, I failed for last months. For another course, I have 50 %. Right, I didn't fail my year, yet. But for the other courses I have always marks like between 60% and 80%. Sometimes, very rare, I have a mark in the 80%.
Okay, there are loads of students here who have such a marks. But there is one teacher of mine who keeps pointing to the English and American schoolsystem. She always says that the students in the USA and in England have such a great marks. She says that everyone of them have mostly A's and some B's. And she says that an A is the same as having 90% and that a B is the same as 80%. It's frustrating. Because here, there are maybe a few students who can have 90 % for most of the courses, because it's so difficult! You're seen like a kind of genius if you have only 90% and some 80%.

Re: I really hate marks - January 6th 2010, 11:50 AM

Our marks depend on how hard the actual test is aswell. Say it's a hard test they might bring the A down from 80% to 75% or something. However if it's a really easy test they might make the marks higher so to get an A you'd need 90%.

If your courses are as difficult as you say then the mark to get an A would be considerably lower. Don't worry about it getting over 50% is fine. Whenever I'm taking a test I always aim to get over 50% and anything higher than that is great.

Also I think what your teacher said about most people having A's and B's in England isn't all that true to be honest. Most people get 5 A*-C at GCSE but I know a lot of people end up with C's. Of course I don't know this for the whole country and everything I'm just using examples from my own school.

Thank you, that's helpful. I think indeed that I should be glad if I have reasonable marks, if I have 50%/60%. But it really seemed that she said that we are bad students and that we should study like fools.
Also, she wants us to be able to study in universities with an incredible level and to do studies with an incredible high difficulty.
But that's not really my ambition, so I don't think that's a problem. I will tell her this, so there won't be any problems.

Not everyone get's As and Bs in the UK - far from it. To get As you have to work very hard.

Everyone has different person goals. I personally struggle to accept a grade below an A in an exam that counts towards my grade, but could cope with a B/C in a mock exam done by my school. But I have a lot of friends who would very happy with getting 50% or 60%, and equally some friends who wont accept anything below 90%, ever.

it depends on what you feel you are capable of and what your goal is.

I think your teacher is being a little bit unfair. Perhaps if you explain to her that you are trying and University is your goal it will be better.
