Question DJ - January 9th 2010, 03:55 AM

Hey guys!

Well ever since New Years Eve I have thought about becoming a DJ during like my spare time.

Is anyone a DJ here and is it hard to learn?

I'm only 17 and don't turn 18 till next year and that's the legal age you can go to clubs and stuff here in Australia.

I know a guy that is a DJ and doesn't turn 18 till April but he does like DJ'ing for like under 18 festivals. I was thinking of asking him to teach me to learn to play the equipment.

What do you guys think?

First you have to start of small. Make your own mix's in ya bedroom and showcase them to friends or make an online radio station or website. Build a vynil collection., Buy some decks. Then you just have to promote yourself until someone gives you the chance. My girlfriend DJs @ Liquid nightclub where we live, thats how she started off... She was doing music tech at college though lol

Well, it's not as hard as playing The Flight of a Bumblebee on the piano but it's not like riding a bicycle either. You can learn the technical side of DJing in about a week or even less if you try hard(basic controls on the mixer & cd players/turntables, beat-matching, transitioning, track structures, learning how to use track keys and speed for track selection, etc..) and with practice you will just get better and better and your music taste will get a LOT sharper if you start liking it and decide to go on with it. But to become really good you will need the experience(most of which you will get in your bedroom, after that you will need to learn how to read the club crowds to keep the flow going and choose the right tracks).
So in a year you can become a proper DJ who will start getting gigs.

DJing is really beautiful, trust me when you get in front of the crowds and start playing and they start dancing and cheering up, waving their hands at you... Best feeling ever, I can't really describe it.

It is a VERY good thing that you have a friend that does DJing! Trust me, he WILL want to help you out and show you everything. Plus you will be able to learn everything without having to spend huge amounts of money on the gear.

So yeah, definitely talk to him about it!

Called the wonderer and yet have no name
If I were you won't you want me or is in my head.
Or is it in my head
Or is it in my head"

I sort of a djay...in a radio way. I like radio in general and I actually make up my own little stations. And I'm the founder of the future radio station @ my school (internet only). So yea, I dj, but not in the most common sense as in mixes.

aww sad to hear that

but don't worry, there are still many ways to learn it!

the best thing you can do is to watch these videos, and also if you want check out DJNairo's vids on youtube.

if you like what you see, and money is not a problem you can buy some proper gear like this or this (aaand just mentioning this )

yeh.. Dj equipment prices are always a turn-off so you must be sure this is what you really want.

there are alternatives, and they are VERY good and VERY cheap!
i started off with this - it is a MIDI controller(it controls the dj software that comes with it, instead of cd's or vinyl you mix the mp3 files(or wav, wma or whatever), so you are limited to mixing on your computer(not a problem if you have a laptop ). more and more people use midi controllers because of many benefis, but in the end they are not as powerful, but you have everything you need for years to come. I highly recommend you using MIDIs in the beginning). This is how the thing looks in action.

OK, it seems a bit scary and complicated but it really isn't.
If you decide to do this, you can always ask me about whatever you need to know.
