Anybody work in (or considering a carrer in) radio? - January 10th 2010, 01:06 AM

Hey. So I'm fascinated by radio for some reason. I plan to work at the local Jazz Station (KCSM-FM, http://www.kcsm.org) after high school (assuming it is still there). I'm not quite sure exactly what I want to do with my life, but radio is definitely a possibility.

I wouldn't like a career in radio, but I'd love to get a job designing radio equipment... sometimes I just hang around ham radio operators to gawk at the equipment, it has this real sort of sci-fi meets CIA feel about it A job as a radio technician would be interesting too, they have bizarre ways of processing the sound to make it clear on the airwaves.

Hey Union of V. Hmm. I never thought about the engineer aspect, but I don't think I would find it as satisfying.

If your liking the sound of radio work then go try it out!! I don't know if it's the same in your country but at the age of 15 we have to go and try out what jobs we think we might do.

Why not write a letter to your local radio station asking if you can spend a day there??
You should also look into doing media studies or something of that sort

We have a radio station in our school that's broadcasting on FM, I spent a week in their as part of some down time - it was amazing!!!

But certainly think about what aspect of radio you want to go into;
-News
-Presenting
-Weather
etc.

Have Fun!

Hey. I'm thinking along the lines of a program host/DJ. I actually have visited 3 radio stations as part of my project to start one at my school. Does your school stream to the internet? I'd love to hear it for some inspiration!

Definitely go for the spot at your school, you'd get a lot of experience as well as being much more likely to get a job. Also if you're looking at radio djing see if you can get a spot on an internet radio, often they have a wide listener base so you'll learn how to cater for a large audience you never interact with, which you won't learn with a local radio

My school's station was my idea . I'm the one working to establish it

And it is Internet radio. We will not have a broadcast signal.

Nice. I'm in the radio station club at my school, and I do a 2 hour politcal commentary on Wednesdays and 4 hour music block on Saturdays. Our station only has 17 watts (megawatts) of broadcasting power though so you can't hear it outside of our town.

I love it, but a future career in dj-ing/communications is pretty competitive, not going to lie. Soooo much fun though. Good luck!

Thanks. There's always community radio. You can still make some good money from it and it's not too competitive. Would be a good place to start.
