I Can't Believe I Can't Decide - January 31st 2009, 02:04 PM

Ok, so my college requires me to take a minor and since I originally wasn't going to do this I have no idea what I should take. I'm majoring in psychology and I'm interested in counseling with teenagers, but I can't find a practical minor. I have 46 minors to choose from and can't find one I want to do. If I'm going to be required to take it I may as well be able to use it for something. I talked to my advisor about it and she said take something you're interested in instead of something practical which didn't really help me. I've looked into several business minors, leadership, personal wellness (Requires physical activities) and something called child and family (Requires 1 credit of internship). Any advice is appreciated and I'm running out of time to choose. Thanks.

Hi Katie,

Those that you've listed look good practically and seem to fit your interest of counselling teenagers. I would chose child and family, mainly because it seems more tailored to 'teenage' years, rather than personal wellness which makes me think of adulthood (not sure why).

Kind of related, which bachelor/degree are you looking for with the psychology major - science, or arts?

Cool

I don't think employers, etc, really consider your minor very much. If you plan on going to grad school, they might but I'm not too sure on that. Do something that you are interested in most importantly, since you have to go through it. Maybe consider something that will help raise/maintain your GPA if you can't decide otherwise.

Best of luck.

Sorry I'm not more help

Do something you enjoy. Creative writing will be helpful to you, even if you won't use it in a career. Art is fun, and may be something to consider. What else does your school offer?

Most employers won't pay attention to your minor, I think.

You could try a foreign language, like Spanish? Being able to speak more than one language will always be seen as a good thing and will always come handy.

I think children and family sounds like a good idea for what you want to do.

For anyone interested my mom helped me look again and we decided on personal wellness. I have a minor, without a million credit hours, that I'm actually interested in and either have or will be required to take most of the credits anyway.

Bravo. Well done you! Some people take foreverrrr to decide on a minor (ad even a mjor)

I wish I could have a minor, but I think with the degree I'm getting it won't be possible if I did, it'd definitely be psychology.

I'm glad you decided on a good minor - I must admit those hours sound good, I always get the impression it should be secondary to a major in terms of time too

since you've decided I'm going to close this, if you want to update it Katie then send me a PM and if any mods disagree you know what to do
