Military and left? - March 18th 2010, 08:49 PM

As already some people here (mainly people who read and post in the debate forum) will have remarked, I'm a Marxist left person with communistic ideas but with an ideology that doesn't correspond to violence. That's my political ideology.
I'm nearly 17 years old. During two years, I had been dreaming about a future career as a soldier or under-officer for Belgium. I mainly dreamt about working in safety-groups or peace intervention.
But my family hasn't been very happy with that idea. They would accept it if I would really do it, but they wouldn't like it, as we want peace. I spoke a lot about it with different people, and a lot of people told me that I should choose: being left and participating to manifestations for peace, or being in the army and working together with often racist and intolerant people.
First, I didn't want to believe it, because there are certainly left soldiers. But then, things changed. On manifestations, friends of mine were attacked by cops and other friends were violently hitted by soldiers. I don't want to work with them. I don't want to work with people who are hitting and breaking arms of people who could be my brothers and sisters.

But now, some of my friends who told me to choose and who prefer the right and military people, are blaming me. They blame me to be an extremistic communist and not to have chosen to be a soldier. But how can they blame me when they told me to choose? Why did they tell me that it's my choice and my life if they are blaming me afterwards?
I don't know what to think. Am I an extremist or not?

In the end the choice is up to you, but you're going to have to come to terms with the fact that, if you believe in peace and non-aggression, you're probably going to be going against your morals should you join the military.

Yeah, maybe I will. That's why, in the end, I'm going to choose another job. But it won't hold me from being volunteer for the UN peacekeepers, will it?
