What A Levels are you taking/thinking about taking? - February 4th 2009, 03:12 PM

Well I leave school this year and am going on to do A Levels.

If you're already studying A Levels, which one's have you taken and what are they like?

If you're leaving school this year, which A Levels are you thinking about taking and why?

I'm thinking of taking...
Maths - Just coz it's a good one to have
Psychology - I find it interesting and have done for a while, wanted to take it at GCSE but didn't have the option
Chemistry - I'm good at it and I like it and I may want to go into that career
Music - Coz I got an A for my mock so I found out I'm actually quite good at it

I'm currently doing my AS levels, however for A-Level I plan on studying French, History and Business Studies because I enjoy them.
I'm dropping art because I hate it and critical thinking as it's not really "recognised".

I finished my A levels in 2006 and I did

Chemistry - A
Maths - A
Physics - B

I got a C in AS French too. Maths is good if you have a good teacher and chemistry is much, much better at A level than at GCSE - you get to do more experiments

Currently studying Maths, Biology and Religious Studies at AS Level. I plan to continue these into A2 Level.

I enjoy all 3 of my subjects but at the moment maths is my weakest subject due to a poor teacher but I m generally good at maths so I am still picking it up and I am teaching myself with text books.
Biology and RS are just so interesting and I love the debates we have in RS.

Re: What A Levels are you taking/thinking about taking? - February 5th 2009, 05:53 AM

I do

Maths
Biology
Chemistry
English Literature

Not sure which one I'll drop yet, probably English Literature

Maths is great, one of my favourites, but I think that you have to get a good teacher for it and you do have to actually do extra work outside of classes if you want to get a high grade.

Chemistry is really, really hard. I'm constantly stressed out because of how hard chemistry is. If you think you can handle it, then go for it, but if you're not planning to go into a science related field after A levels then I wouldn't personally put myself through it.

If you are wanting to go into a science field, as you're doing two sciences (chemistry and maths) I thought you might be, you should be aware that nowhere regards psychology as a 'science' and you would make yourself a better university candidate for science subjects by doing biology or physics instead of either psychology or music.

Top set on maths have already done their GCSE exam so we're doing A Level now and it seems a bit strange to not continue it on after Year 11. Our teacher's great and I'm finding the work quite easy to understand once he's told us about it.

I'm not sure about going into a science field and I really struggle with Biology and Physics so that's why I haven't chosen them. I'm thinking about doing Psychology with Criminology in Uni so I definitely want to try Psych at A Level to see if I actually enjoy it.

Re: What A Levels are you taking/thinking about taking? - February 8th 2009, 04:36 PM

I'm in my AS year doing
Maths
Biology
Greek
Chemistry

Maths is okay, it's a huge step from GCSEs and there's not much time to understand things like before so if you're going to do it, then prepare to be confused, and work
(And I got A* for it at IGCSE)

I hated biology last year but this year it's really interesting.

Chemistry is gobble goup to me I know if I sit down and really try to understand etc etc I can do it, I'm just lazy xD
So if you want to do this, be motivated and ready to work.

And Greek, just don't take it unless you know the language

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

I'm currently in my AS year and doing:
history - amazing, but hard, very very big jump from GCSE
geography - just no words, I am a HUGE geography nerd though...
politics - again, wonderful. Just amazing
german - very good, better than GCSE, but hard, and so much VOKABELN!!
I love them all, and am predicted As, so crossed fingers. Don't know whether I'll drop one or not, most people do, but I guess it depends on the grades etc.
