Which job in media is the best? - April 8th 2010, 10:51 PM

I have been taking media for the past two years and it's probably my favourite subject and I think I might want a career in it.. but all the careers in media always seem so stressful, for example working for a magazine - if you watch things like ugly betty things never go right! :L

so which do you think would be a good area to enter:

film, tv, magazine, radio, newspaper... ?

just want people's opinions also, if anyone has jobs in these fields, what it actually is like..

TV shows are far from reality! Don't pay attention to them, they are fictionalized to meet entertainment demands.

I recommend you start making phonecalls and see if you can shadow in any and all fields to get true first hand experience; another option is externships and internships. Great way to get experience.

I would definitely recommend shadowing each various field you might be interested in. Often the job you're imagining is not what it seems to be and it can help you find out what sparks your interest the most.

Media can be a busy career but it's not nearly as insane as it shows on TV.

I totally agree with Steph. Job shadow each one. But also you need to think about which one you would rather do.

If you love to write, and want to write for you living. Then go with Magazine, or Newspaper. If you're okay with acting infront of others, then go with Film, Television, or Radio. They all seem like fun, and if it helps at all, I wanted to be a radio DJ for a while

Good luck!

I have no professional experience, but radio djaying can be very cool.

One note: I'm sure it's a lot more fun if you can choose your own music (instead of a computer generated playlist) so I would try not to go with commercial radio, but that's only my opinion.

One of my friends wants to be a TV show host, or work in as a News Castor. Maybe you could go down to a local station and look around and see how you like it?

Working on the radio could be really fun, but then so could working on the TV, it just depends what you really want to do.
