Male nurses. - January 7th 2009, 06:17 PM

Views towards them...
How you think society reflects against them nowadays?
Stories, experiences...

I'm just wondering as we had an interesting discussion today in class.
I know a male nurse, and I think he's amazing. Really inspiring.

Re: Male nurses. - January 7th 2009, 06:22 PM

For me personally, when I see a male nurse I don't have a problem with it at all. It's all the same to me, just doing their job, male or female. Although, I find all doctors and such creepy and annoying, I don't like people touching me. I have seen people ask for other nurses if they get a male one. I think it's really mean... But, what can you do I guess. I had a male nurse once, he was so cool! We chatted about the band Panic! At the Disco. Yay!

My Dads a nurse and he loves his job there isn't anything he would do other then being a nurse. I think if you want to be a nurse then go for your Dreams.

They're totally fine with me. hehe, was that the question?
I think it's probably addressing stereotypes within a society...
But they're fine with me, you know.
I mean, women have always been "caretakers", that's sort of what's happened, so men had to fall into the "we hunt, we are tough" category, as it was the only one left.
I actually had a male phlabotamist (spelling?) who was excellent.
Male nurses can be great at their jobs too, more power to 'em...anybody in the workforce has my respect. (:

My male cousin is a nurse, I haven't really talked to him about his job, though I don't think he's having any problems with it other than the late hours he does work. I think there is some stigma still against male caretaking type positions these days.

I don't think there is anything wrong with males being nurses. I know tons, and one of my family's closest friends in a male nurse. I think society is becoming more accepting of them, too.

I don't mind them at all in general, but if I'm laying on a hospital bed half naked I don't appreciate a guy touching me or even seeing me. Creeps me out and depresses me way too much. So really I don't have a problem with them personally, more like a problem with myself.

If they're just in a doctor's office, ER, scans, or things like that then I don't mind them at all. In my experience, they've been way faster and nicer than the girl nurses that I've had.

I don't see any problem with it. I know loads of male nurses. To me they're just nurses.

Male nurses are just the same as female to me.Plus male nurses are probably better at handling people like me, those of us who can physically best a female nurse with a needle.I think their cool though.

She whispered to her own reflection "I will be strong."

I don't see the problem at all. They always seem a lot nicer than the female ones in my experience as well, as they are so old and grumpy at my hospital!

Seriously though, we aren't allowed to judge female mechanics or police officers or anything, so why do people still look down on male nurses? There seems to be the idea that if they were clever, they would be doctors but they are nurses because they couldn't make it. That's ridiculous and every male nurse I know does it because they like their job. I think its a good thing and in my opinion its not even an issue

As a future Doctor, I shouldn't say this however I prefer female nurses.

There is something inside of me that is sexist and beleives it's not a Man's job.
I don't mean to be sexist but it's just honestly how I feel and I'm not trying to flame or cause any fights.

I beleive it's because I've always been a dominant male / alpha and as a result I expect everyone to be as strong as me and people are not, they are weak and I do not have respect for them.

I'll admit that jaymz404's idea also stretches a little towards me. But at least I understand thats just society ramming down my throat that nursing is "womanly."

I honestly have no problem with it. Do what you want, I don't care.

Re: Male nurses. - January 8th 2009, 02:37 PM

I don't mind male nurses what so ever. Especially if they are cute, lol. I think its more important that where it is needed a nurse of the same sex is provided, so it is important for there to be a lot of them out there. For example, to bathe male patients. I think society sees nursing as womenly, but a lot of my male friends have the prefect qualities. Now, as for midwives, althought I don't have anything against male midwives, I would push them through the window if they ever came in while I was giving birth.
