In my school the professor can just drop you from the class but I guess you are in high school it really depends on your school rules and how many days you are allow to miss. If you only have 5 days and the haven’t told you anything I think it’s ok, maybe you can try going to your professors and asking what’s going on.

Here at my school, you can miss up to 50 classes, I missed about 56 classes in 2 separate courses. I failed one class, because I completely bombed the exam, but the other one I still passed with an 88% So you can still pass, unless things at your school are completely different!

You could also talk to your teachers. They are a great resource.

It's illegal to skip so much school here in the States.
My solution to that is to join homeschool. I did it and graduated early.

I wouldn't say you'll be in much trouble, since you're almost at your Junior Cert, and once you finish that, you don't even have to be in school anymore.
Just try your best for your exams and hopefully there won't be any trouble from the education board.

I'm not sure exactly how the Irish system works but for Canada, if you miss more than the maximum amount of days you're allowed to miss, then you fail the year. If you skip only a certain class so much, then you fail that class. For this, it does not matter why you were unable to attend. The part where it does matter is when you consider your parent(s)/guardian(s) because if the Irish system is as it is in North America, your parents may be faced with quite a lot of trouble and you may be put into child protection agency or to another family relative.

I would not say you're off the hook though because you still can get into trouble and fail the year or certain classes only. I would still study for the exams as though this issue is not present because you may be able to not get into any trouble over this.

You could ask the professors and administrators because the visit of the education officer indicates the school does know your issue. The administrators would probably be the best group to contact for this in your school because they're the ones who will ultimately declare that you've failed, if you do so there's not much power in the professor's hands. You could still ask the professor if you want because they may be able to point you to the correct administrator to talk to over this.

Re: missing time off school - May 30th 2010, 05:24 PM

well im allowed about 22 days off,and ive had just over 50 days off,and i think they dont even realise how many days ive had off, because they send a letter home every few months to let you know how many days youve had off,the last letter i got home was about a mon ago saying i had 17 days off, when i had about 35 days off, they always miss count them, and the last time the education officer came around was because my mam had called up and asked for an education oficer to speak to me.

i dont turn 16 until next january,so i turn 16 half way through the year, but ive been told that i have to complete the year because im not alowed to leave half way through. is that true?i cant be home schooled, the education officer laughed at me when i said that, and she said it wasnt even an option for me,id love to be home schooled.

well i only have 2 days left, and there not even full days,im only in school on monday and tuesday for an hour and 15 mins, then im off until i start my exams.my parents write me notes even when im not sick just so i dont get caught skipping school again, ive been caught skipping school once this year and once last year, ive got 2 serious warnings on my report, and if im caught skipping school again ill be expelled, but i think the fact that i have notes sayin im sick that i should be okay, and they wouldve sent an education officer round by now. ino ill be allowed to do my exams,as there really important and theres alot of other people who are hardly ever in school and there alowed to do there exams, so hopefully all will be ok
