University Halls Question - June 4th 2010, 07:33 PM

Are you allowed pets when you stay in university accommodation? I mean small pets like hamsters and things.

This will depend entirely on your halls and the staff there. If you know which halls you're going to be in then I'd suggest contacting them directly to ask about their policies. At my university several people I know kept rabbits in their halls.

Yeah, depends on the Uni/accommodation. It will be something to ask on open days.
My brother had a cat and couldn't keep it in halls so I looked after it for a year then he moved in to privately rented student house and the landlord allowed pets so he could have his cat there.

Well, most of them won't though, but as others have said, it depends on the accommodation really.

Best to phone ahead though and ask =)

As the others have already stated, it certainly depends on the uni and the accomadations. I know that many uni's in the USA, have a strict no pet rule. Some however will allow like a goldfish.
If you are looking to really wanting to bring a pet with you to uni, I would suggest that you stay off campus.

I believe most do not allow pets but they may make an exception if it's something very small and quite such as a pet fish or salamander. At my university dogs and such are not allowed unless it's for the purposes of a seeing eye dog but even then I'm not so sure if that's allowed.

Most unis don't allow pets.

Can i say please don't take your hamster to uni halls it will cause him a lot of stress - it will be very loud at times, people coming in and out etc. Please be a responsible pet owner and leave your hamster at home until 2nd year. It's not fair on your hamster for you to take him to halls.

It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.

I wasn't planning on taking my hammy, don't worry. It might be dead by then anyway

I was just curious. Thanks for the replies I'll check with all the unis I'm looking at whether any pets are allowed since I might buy a fish

Most uni's do say no, but make exceptions for fish, so just ask

It depends on the place. Some will allow small animals. Other places will only allow fish in a certain size tank. Still others will not allow any animals at all. You will need to check the student handbook to find out what your school will and will not allow.

Re: University Halls Question - June 8th 2010, 05:27 PM

Certainly call and ask. My university does not allow any kind of pets - even fish - in the residence buildings. If you really want a pet/s, wait for second year and move off campus. It may be difficult for you to care for pets while in university, though, especially if you're living on your own. I'll be moving out of the house next year for university and I'm worried about taking care of myself, let alone a pet or more. Just be weary of that.

Re: University Halls Question - June 12th 2010, 08:31 PM

We allowed fish and any animal that could survive entirely in water. My sister's dorms looked the other way when the RA had a hamster and later my sis owned a cat (she lived in a quad where everyone had their own room and shared living quarters.)

Most places do not want to risk animals and some won't allow fish in case of the tank leaking or people forgetting them over break.

A lot of places allow fish if the tanks are within a certain size. It probably won’t be a problem, and I bet they have their housing policy online with all of their rules.
