But their telling us to do Higher in subjects we want to do in 5th and 6th year because it will open up higher level for us to do in senior cycle cos we do 13 subjects i unior but only up to 8 in senior English Irish and Maths are manditory but I odnt know what to do in senior cycle!
Do I do geography, History and Biology to do geology which is the safe option which my teachers and guidence counciler sy I should or do I go with Lit. , Bilology and religion to go into writhing which I love but am told not to do because of the recession
I have no clue what to do follow my dream or follow my head?

Best advice I can give is do what you enjoy most. Never listen to teachers who tell you to take the "safest" subjects or ones that will get you on the "best courses". Most often the subjects you actually enjoy are ones you'll likely want to go for a career in.

I know nearly all my friends who went for the subjects they wanted enjoyed it and ended up grateful they decided to ignore the teachers advice. And I know of a huge number of people in university degrees that stress them to death and that they hate because they gave into pressure from teachers.

Personally I was advised to do business studies because it "linked" with my other subject but I chose art because I love drawing. I'd never done Art classes before, but got an honors in the leaving cert and ended up doing a short college course on it too.

A career should be something you enjoy and want to do. Biology, Lit and Religion are good subjects and a lot of people move on to great things from them. A lot of writers are extremely successful. I'd really advise following your dreams rather than taking a subject you might hate and regret. Best of luck!

I live in Ireland and go to UCD.

Basically you can do any combination of subjects to do geology or english literature. It doesn't matter what you pick for your leaving cert. You can do 3 sciences as your options and still do english lit.

If you're going to to geology or English lit, the former will require you to apply for the science omnibus and the latter for the arts omnibus. This applies to every university. When you are successful in your application and get ont he course you then choose the geology classes out of all the science ones if you get science omnibus and you end up with a geology degree, or you do the same for english lit if you get the arts omnibus.

The geology will be 4 years and the english lit 3 years. The omnibus courses will give you the option of graduating with a second degree too, e.g. Geology and Biology, or English and History.

Either way the message I'm trying to tell you is that what you pick now and the subjects you pick for your leaving cert will not restrict your choices in these fields. However, if you want Medicine or Vetinary or some other specialised course subject choices will affect it.

Either way I suggest you take everything higher level. I did...almost. You can also change from OL to HL after your junior cert. I changed from OL maths to HL maths after my junior cert.

Basically the safest option in your position is to pick HL in every subject for your JC and then pick the easiest subjects at HL for your leaving cert. That is if you still want to study geology or english lit.

I hope that helps.
