Re: Types of college supplies you need - July 25th 2010, 03:07 PM

I'll tell you what I'm purchasing. I'll only list school supplies, not residence supplies or anything like that.

- notebooks
- post-it notes
- binders
- highlighters
- pens
- pencils
- lead for pencils
- erasers
- white out
- lined paper
- blank paper
- graph paper
- math set
- calculator
- stapler
- staples
- hole puncher
- agenda
- backpack
- paper clips
- duo tangs/folders
- tape
- sticky tack (for residence room/posters)
- scissors
- pins (for cork board, if you have one)
- dry erase markers (for white board, if you have one)
- envelopes (standard and letter)
- labels

I compiled a massive list of stuff that I need to get for university - school supplies, laundry supplies, clothes, electronics, food, general items, and bathroom/shower supplies.

Good luck and enjoy shopping for college [:

Depends what classes you're taking and what kinda learner you are, but maybe a tape recorder?

A very light laptop to carry around to classes. I put the mic on to record the professor, it's easier for me than taking notes.

Handy thingies are those pens with four colours in one pen. You know the blue and white Bic pens you always see around?? They're actually trés useful for quick note-taking. I never got around to buying one of these in first year of college but I really should have!!

For Lectures themselves (I always found a pen and paper better than a laptop, mainly for security reasons)

Pens - At least 2 but 3 different colours.
Pencil - At least 3
Pencil Sharpener
Rubber/Eraser
A4 notepad
A5 notepad
Ruler
A Pencilcase to store them in
A Calculator (essential if you're doing anything remotely maths related - it was indispensable in my engineering course to the point where I had a spare)

For at home

Post-it notes
Pins and Noticeboard if you're allowed to have one.
A recycling bin (not essential but we all like to be green )
Hole Punch
Stapler
An efficient filing system
Bottle Opener

Backpack, paper, pens, you laptop, pencils, scantrons, binder. Mexico has a point but you have to ask the teacher if you could record their notes before you say so. The professor could fail a lawsuit if they're "up the butt" kinda people. I've been told no before.

Also if you're taking a special class *art, music, sports* bring your paints and instruments the first day cuz they'll *instructors* be impressed.

-Binders
-Zip drive
-Blank CD's
-Highlighters
-Scissors
-3 whole punch (this is very useful for teacher handouts)
-Folders
-Flash cards
-Flash card box (a small one for index cards you're working on/studying with, and a large one to store them all in (including something to seperate them))
-Paper clips
-Stapler and plenty of staples
-Looseleaf paper
-Printer paper and plenty of ink (fresh cartridge is best)
-Computer and accessories (you probably know what you need)
-Mechanical pencils (as opposed to regular ones) - these will keep you from having to worry about them being sharp
-Plenty of blue and black ink pens
-Some kind of planner - I use a student edition
-I have colored gel pens to use for my planner - I color coordinate binders for classes with pen ink, folders, etc. to keep myself organized.
-Erasers (either classic or clickable)
-Calculator
-Voice recorder of some sort, but again, make sure to ask permission before you record
-Backpack/Totebag
-Textbook highlighter - these are a bit more delicate than your average highlighters, and can keep the ink from bleeding through the pages
-Tape
-Filing system of some kind - I have a 7 pocket filer specifically for graded papers for each of my classes, as well as a small file box with folders in it for each of my classes for other various work. I find it handy to keep my graded papers all together in case you have to challenge a professor's grades (which they sometimes post online and can make an error in their own gradebook).

After having been through 3 years of college, you get a pretty big list of stuff you need. :P But, hey, you kinda live and learn. :P

I'm assuming by that planner you mean something like this??: http://www.amazon.com/Notebook-Refer.../dp/0769643434 [also sorry if store urls aren't allowed mods]

I don't have a laptop and probably won't get one for a while. ;p

Thanks guys so far though.

Yes, something along those lines. Though, mine is a DayTimers, and it's amazing. It was expensive (about $134 to begin with, about $25 for annual refills), but it's worth it! It'll last a long time, and it's SO handy. Speaking of, it's time for me to buy my refills. xD

Also, since you don't have a laptop and probably won't be getting one for the start of the school year, I would definitely suggest getting a flash drive with a large amount of memory. You'll probably be spending quite a while in the library/computer area in order to get your work done, and your work isn't something you should just print out and forget about. Save it just in case.

College is about the same as regular school for supplies, but make sure you have all of these:

~pens (I recommend black ink)
~pencils
~scantrons (some classes make you buy your own)
~post-it notes
~index cards (for flashcards or reference note cards)
~highlighter
~binder
~notebook
~looseleaf paper
~dry erase marker OR chalk (depends on what kind of boards the study rooms at the college library have)
~eraser for above item and regular eraser
~mini stapler (I could not live without this at my school)
~flash drive (when you use a computer makes it much easier to transfer files)
~regular computer paper
~printing credits (you might say you won't need them, but believe me, you will)
~some sort of planner
~student id (the one at my university is a combo credit card, but even if yours isn't always bring it with you)

Other than that it tends to be class specific. If there are special items that you should have for a class, you just need to remember to get them. For example, I took an intro to music class and I took with me a tuner that tells what note people are singing or playing. The teachers normally mention special items if they are mandatory, but it doesn't hurt to be creative - you never know what can earn you a few extra credit points.

The student IDs at the community college have the ID number and is a DEBIT card and not a credit card.

Aside from all the common sense things, a three hole punch will be useful and maybe a little stapler, but you can usually find one somewhere. You will need a planner though. I've never had to buy my own scantrons. You can always go to the class first to see if you need anything weird. If you're going to use binders make sure they aren't the flimsy kind sice they last all of a week before falling apart, but it depends how you stay organized. I personally don't like binders and would only use one if they required me to. If a tape recorder helps then you can get one, but not all professors will let you use one. A USB memory drive will be essential, especially if you don't have a laptop. They're usually about $20
