Waitressing by myself for the first time! - July 26th 2010, 08:46 PM

Hi, I've recently found a job as a waitress and so far, I've always worked with one of the other waiters. But in my next shift, I'll be the only waitress working. I'm scared that if I don't know how to do something (mix drinks, for example) or where to find something. The only other people that will be there are the chefs and I don't know if they'll always have the time to help me with something... It's not a big restaurant. There will not be a lot of people around.

I can understand how scary that can be because I'm a bar maid an sometimes work as waiting staff too. When you're working all I can advice you to do is keep your cool and just try to remember what other people have shown you in the past. Just try to remember your basic drinks, the likelyhood of someone asking for something unusual is next to none. If someone does ask for something unusual or you haven't heard for before don't be afraid to ask them, they may have a particular taste to something that most people do not. It's okay to ask, and keep calm and be patient with yourself!
Good luck!

Hey, I just started as a waitress too Congrats on the job!
I have with issues the different procedures for making different coffees (latte, cappucino, didn't even learn expresso) but I find a good thing to do is to write down how to make each one when I get home so it's fresh in my mind and then I can either leave the paper somewhere I'll see it a lot and subconsciously absorb it or take it to work with me and keep it in a pocket. I can escape to the back corner to "check" something and look at the paper to see what I need to do.
Good luck with your new job!! Hope this helps.

It's amazing how much we know about a subject when we think we know nothing. You may feel like you know nothing about where things are kept or how to mix drinks, but I bet you already have all that knowledge, and it'll come out when you need it to.
