What Is A Fallacy? - September 7th 2010, 01:26 AM

I'm having a hard time understanding what a fallacy is. Can someone put it into simple terms for me?

A fallacy is basically something that is not true, or false.

I can try to help if you explain what you need to know about it?

Fallacies are incorrect logical arguments so the resulting information (i.e. the claim being argued about) is wrong. There are different types of fallacies in different categories and each fallacy gives a unique reason for why what is said is incorrect. For example, a circular argument is a fallacy.

Expanding on that (in case you don't fully grasp it yet), a fallacy is an argument that is not logical, regardless of what the argument is actually claiming. For example you could claim that there are more Italian immigrants in the US than Chinese immigrants - that is wrong but it is not a logical fallacy since in the past there may well have been more Italians than Chinese. But if you say that there are more Italian immigrants than Chinese immigrants because in your hometown there are more Italians than Chinese you have committed a logical fallacy (Proof By Example) because the logic behind the statement doesn't work (your hometown does not equate to the entire US). You can then dismiss the statement since the logic behind it has been proven to be false - a fallacy.

Beware that just because the argument is fallacious doesn't mean it's claim is - "There are more Chinese than Italians because etc." is still fallacious, since even though the claim is true the logic behind it is flawed. You can claim it's raining without looking outside, and it may very well be raining, but there's no reason for me to believe you. Fallacies help us decide what argument is worth listening to and which betrays logic.
