Haiku! (Help please?) - February 18th 2009, 05:34 PM

Quote:
Here, where a thousand
Captains swore great conquest...tall
Grass their monument
What place is being described in the haiku?

The first thing that comes to my mind is a battlefield, but I Googled it and one person said that it was simply describing grass.

I know that poetry can be interpreted in different ways and it's silly for me to obsess over this, but I'm obsessing anyway. What comes to your mind when you read the haiku?

I'd say it has something to do with war/war memorial to.
But no one is going to interpret it exactly the same, so it's all how you see it.

I would have said somewhere to do with war but NOT a physical monument, because it says "grass is their monument", implying that there is no memory or reminder other than the grass. Maybe somewhere a war was fought that has no other significance and no other memorial? Sorry I can't be more help

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, youll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
Youll see the sun come shining through for you

Thanks for your input, everyone.
I'm leaning toward battlefield for the same reasons Claire mentioned. But like I said, it's poetry, so the only person who knows exactly what it means is the author. And as far as I know, the original poet of this haiku is dead :\

I'd say it's about the forgotten people who fought and died. I interpreted it as the Western Front during WWI
