Writing a CV - October 25th 2010, 06:56 PM

I just wrote one as I'm going to apply for loads of part-time jobs within this week.

I think I have the basics down right. I have my personal info (name, date of birth, address, e-mail address etc.), Personal statement, Employment history and education :/ Idk if I've missed anything.

  • References and their contact details (If you don't have room you can just write "Referees available on request").
  • Any other relevant experience/achievements that doesn't come underneath employment or education like volunteer work or awards received.
  • Personal qualities and interests.

The last two might come under personal statement though. How long is it?

I think you've got it all down, including what Rachel has said too. References are a must. Be it a previous employer and/or a personal reference.

Yay for jobs!

I think for some places they may be ok with that but let them know beforehand and they might request another one.

Some people may be iffy.. Maybe use a teacher or something. Also, here in Canada, we don't have to put our birthdays on it, because thats private, they don't need to know when our birthday is until you're hired.

Here you need your date of birth as there are law to how many hours you can work at certain ages, rates of minimum wages for certain ages and under 18's can't work in certain places like bar work. So they need to know you date of birth so they know if you are suitable for the job before they waste their time with interviews etc. They aren't allowed to discriminate because of age though.

Re: Writing a CV - October 28th 2010, 12:16 PM

Kind of lame Everything I could actually get online I've already applied for. I'll walk around town tomorrow and hand my CV in shops and stuff.

I have to call some woman at 3pm though about another job

Going around Town and handing out CVs sounds like the best thing to do right now. It'll also give you a chance to talk to some of the shop managers to get a better idea of what'll be expected of you for that role. Whilst it's annoying if you get rejected/don't hear back from places, don't give up. A lot of people are in the same boat as you right now (myself included), so just keep trying.

If you hand CV's out aim for smaller stores. I tried handing CVs out to larger store and many wouldn't take it and just told me if they had any vacancies it would be online and I would have to apply through there...
