Duke of Edinburgh... should i finish? Stressed - January 17th 2011, 08:46 PM

So, when i was in high school I did my bronze and silver awards. I then started my gold during college. However, as i tore the ligament in my ankle the day before my walk, i never finished.

I have the opportunity to finish it- all i need to do is 2 expeditions, and 6 months physical and a presentation.

But tbh i'm not sure if it's worth it. It's expensive- about £250. Very time consuming, as we have to do an hour meeting every week. This is at the same time as a committe i'm on.

Just confused. Do i quit when i've come so far. Or do i admit that it's been 2 years since i've done it, that the whole point of doing it was for my uni application and i'm already in.

Just wanted to know what you guys thought. Is it worth carrying on?

What would you feel like if someone said to not do it? How would you react?

You have to have decide for yourself. Work out the pros and cons of each decision. If you still enjoying doing it, keep doing it, but if you don't maybe it's tie to stip. Think about it.

It's complicated. I think my mum will be really mad at me if i quit as she helped to finance me. How do i tell her I don't want to complete it? x

Just be honest with her and tell her.

As someone who similarly started the Gold Award in sixth form and only completed it at university (and boy did it feel like I'd never complete the bloody thing...), I would recommend you persevere with it and complete it. It is something employers look upon favourably going forward as it shows you have versatility and can reach set goals, and for me it was also a big confidence booster as it took me out of my comfort zone (particularly the residential project). Plus once it's done you need never look at an OS map or pair of walking boots ever again.

I realise that sounds like an advert for the Award so I'll finish by stressing that it is entirely up to you, and as long as you're happy with your decision that is what really matters.

However bleak things seem, however insurmountable the darkness appears, remember that you have worth and nothing can take that away.
