Question My wish - mum ruined it - February 16th 2011, 11:43 AM

I wanted to go on to do a apprienship at my college, i have a work place that would be more than happy to take me on next year. But my mum after some time of thinking about it said im not able to do the apprienship due to her child benefit being stoped. yes we are tight on money and the extra £50.00 ish pound a week for me helps, but its not fair to stop me doing something i want. i want to do as much as possible in college before i have to start to pay for them courses. i also wish to open my own pet shop when i get older so i wish to do as much to help this dream coming true as possible.

Is it true that if i do a appreinceship she will lose the child benefit for myself ?
is there anyway around this ?

I've never heard of child benefits being stopped, I just assumed that since it would technically be full time education that she'd still get it for you, you should probably check how it works yourself, or go to somebody who would know at your school/college.
In the end, can she actually stop you from doing an apprentiship if you really want to do it?

I'm not sure, you could google it for a start, but I think you could maybe talk to connexions if you have one in your school? Or most large towns have a connexions office.

You could always go into college on a day you're not scheduled to be there to talk to them.

And apprenticeships should pay around £50 a week. Could you not tell your mum that you'll give her £50 a week out of your wages so she doesn't have to worry about that money?

It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.

I think Child Care Benefit is there until you are 21 years of age or unless you start working. I am guessing the apprenticeship is not a course that is classed as 'education'. No doubt the apprenticeship comes with some money for you.

1. Option 1 (see how much the apprenticeship gives you and pay your Mum the money she would have lost).
2. Option 2 - say in education and your mum will still get her child benefit.
3. Option 3 - take the apprenticeship and a small job (if you can get one) so you can still give your mum some money for your board and lodging).

Good luck, times are hard. I am sure you mum is not doing this on purpose, it is just she have bills to pay that need to be paid.

Child Tax Credit is paid to those who have at least one child or who have at least one young person in their care (such as a young person or child who usually lives with you).
If you are looking after a child under 16, or under 20 if the child is in full time education or approved training, then you may be able to claim Child Tax Credit to help with the cost of looking after them.

Personally she can't stop you from going and doing an apprentichip

I travel by the college coachs and they wont always let you on when its not your day. i do a Tuesday work placement and a Wednesday job so couldnt make it anyways...

I heard that we get a min of £75 a week... might of misheard but yes this is a idea
