Got Kicked Out - September 12th 2011, 05:37 PM

So at the college I'm going to now, we don't have to audition to be part of the music department, but we do have to audition for the performing ensembles. After my jazz band audition, I was told that I was definitely going to be Lead Trombone in PJO (Pioneer Jazz Orchestra, the lower-level Big Band on campus), and I may be in Jazz I (the upper-level jazz combo), but I would be on a lower part in that ensemble. A couple days later, I received and email from the instructor saying that he wanted me to play Bass Trombone in Jazz I and be Lead Trombone in PJO. So I went to JI rehearsal today, and the instructor told me that he didn't want me in JI this semester because one of the tuba players wanted to try bass trombone, and since he was older, they gave him my spot. Is this right, and what can I do about it?

I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive, so that two, three, four, five hundred will step forward, so the gay doctors will come out, the gay lawyers, the gay judges, gay bankers, gay architects … I hope that every professional gay will say ‘enough’, come forward and tell everybody, wear a sign, let the world know. Maybe that will help.” Harvey Milk, 1978

I think it is somewhat fair because you are already in another ensamble and this other student is older. That is how it usually happens, seniority.

If you don't like it you can always go to your professor and talk to him about it and tell him you think its unfair. You could also go to the head of the music department and see if it is against rules. But I highly doubt it is.

I do think it's unfair to just kick another student out of place. Most teachers at least discuss it with someone before doing it. I'm sure he had his reasons, though. Maybe he figured you would be really busy with your responsibilities in PJO? Also, since you were told at first that you only might be in JI, maybe they didn't have everything set up and organized, so gave away a spot they didn't really have. Try not to be mad...I know it's really irritating to be pushed out of a spot (happened to me all the time in orchestra) but if you're good enough to get lead you've been doing this a while, so you know that sometimes certain members must be sacrificed to make it a better team. If they think you'll be too busy with PJO to practice your JI stuff that's probably why you got pushed out.
