Confused about my major and occupation I want to have

I just started my first semester at a community college in my city this week. My major is currently Biology, but I'm not sure if this is the right major for occupation I want and THEN I'm not even sure what the occupation I want is called! What I want to do is research an effective cure for cancer. I'm guessing that would be classified as an oncologist, but what I want to do is work behind the scenes in a lab researching for cures and treatment. My question is do oncologists like have to treat patients with cancer because I just can't handle seeing people sick and battling this disease which is why I would rather just want to work in a lab finding a cure.

Biology is a good place for you to start with, you can get more specialized later on. Chemistry could also be an option, but you're in the right spot for research.

Biology, and if you're at a university that has it, add a pre-med focus onto your major, I think it's called a focus? Or as soon as you transfer to a university do so. I would also recommend you just talk to your guidance counselors. They are there to help these kind of questions! But I think Biology with Pre-Med is exactly what you need.

Yes, I thought about and that would be the practical thing to do. Unfortunately, at the guidance office at my school there's a 2-3 hour wait just to talk to a counselor! If I want to avoid that wait I'd have to be to school at like 7am and I just can't seem to do that lol! I get around soon though, I just wanted to know if anyone on here could answer my questions in the mean time. Thanks for the advice so far Steffani and Traci!
