Playing in an orchestra pit for musicals? - February 16th 2012, 01:55 AM

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to get a job in a professional orchestra pit? I've played with my high school and I'm going to be with the community theatre in the spring. I love playing musicals and I think I want to do it professionally, as my career if it's possible. I play bass, have my own instrument, and can read music, if that makes any difference.

Sorry I couldn't be there, I was tied to a rocking chair.

First off, that is a great job ambition. I'm also a musician, and just from what some of the others I know have said that is like a dream job because of its stability! I'm almost 100% sure that you need to have a BA in Music Performance or it's equivalent. So that means being able to play at a college level. Your experience with your high school band and community theatre would also look great! You would also be required to do an audition.
You should do some research or ask a guidance councilor/teacher at your school if they can give you any suggestions on what you may need to do Good luck with everything, and you can accomplish anything if you want it bad enough!

Awesome. I figured I would need some kind of music degree. Thanks!
