Have you ever moved town/school? - February 18th 2012, 12:10 PM

So, my Mum has just told me that there's a chance she will be made redundant at the end of this week. If that happens, she wants to move away from our home town.

This has no effect on me as I don't live at home anymore however my brother and sister do and are still in school. I'm worried about them leaving their friends and school life and starting fresh in a new place. They have mobile phones and access to the internet so they can keep in touch with their old friends. But it's making new friends that I'm concerned about. Will people accept them or will they be a target for bullying? It's not so bad for my brother as he is about to move up to secondary school so everyone is in a transition but it's not quite the same for my sister.

I guess I'm just wondering what your experiences are of moving schools and meeting new people. Was it easy for you? Did people welcome you? etc...

We moved to the other side of town when I was the same age as your brother. Even though everyone is in the transition stage, it is a bit awkward. People still have the groups of friends that they made in elementary school and they aren't always too keen on letting outsiders in. I wish I could tell you it will be an easy ride for both of them, but the first couple days might be a little rough. Personally, I made friends within the first week, but I got shut down a lot. Just tell your siblings to put themselves out there and talk to as many new people as possible. If they let other people know that they're new, they might get a better response because people will understand that they don't know anyone. Don't be too worried, though. They'll fall into the right group eventually and the negative memories (if there are any) will be buried.

wanderlust consumed her;
foreign hearts & exotic minds compelled her.
she had a gypsy soul
and a vibrant heart for the unknown.
