IMPORTANT: Need advice on footnotes. - January 10th 2009, 11:12 PM

Ok, so, I have NO idea when I'm supposed to put footnotes in my writing. at all. (I am using footnotes instead of end notes in this essay) I remember I need to include them after statistics... and direct quotes, but there's a whole lot more which I don't remember? help? please?

Those are the most important. Also, if you're including information of any kind, even paraphrasing, you need to cite it.

Not around so much now that school's started

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Hi Vicki,

If this isn't due for Monday, I'd ask your teacher in class that day. Some teachers have different rules. If you're writing according to a specific style manual (MLA, Chicago, etc.) then you should find a copy. You can google the name of the format you're supposed to be writing in to get the info for free without having to actually buy the manual, too. (Which is good, cause they're really expensive!).

But in terms of general guidlines:
for statistics or direct quotations from a work (as you said)
when you refer to a work (if you mention it in passing, give it a footnote with the full information)
to acknowledge when a thought or idea isn't your own (ex: if you read an interpretation of a historical event or of a scientific experiment in a book, add a footnote with the info of the book.)

Helpful links:
The Dawson College website's MLA guide
The City University of New York website's Chicago Style footnoting guide

I hope that helps. Talk to your teacher on Monday if you can. S/he might have other specific rules you have to follow for her/his class.

Things seem impossible until you start to do them.

PM me anytime. I love to talk. :]
