Personal Statement - March 9th 2012, 11:08 PM

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knows what a personal statement is or how to write one. I have never heard of them.
Thanks.

Are you referring to a personal statement for college applications? If so, colleges will generally give you an idea of what they want. If they don't, then what they usually want to see is a little bit about yourself and why you want to apply to their college, what your career goals are, what your strengths/weaknesses are, what you excelled in during high school, what clubs/activities/volunteer groups you worked with, etc. I realize that's pretty broad, which is why I was wondering if this was for a college application, and if they gave you any sort of guideline on what they want to see in your personal statement.

What I thought of when I saw the title was a goal or intention. So maybe that's what it's referring to?

It is for a scholarship and they do not say anything about what they want, just about needing a one-page personal statement along with the application.

Is there any way that you can contact the people offering the scholarship and ask for further clarification? If it's just one page, then I imagine they want to know why you're applying for the scholarship (what you intend to study/accomplish with it), and why you deserve to have it (what you've done to prepare for your goals [classes/clubs/activities], special needs/circumstances that warrant financial aid, etc.).

Re: Personal Statement - March 10th 2012, 01:13 AM

I just had to write letters of intents (i.e., statement of purpose) for grad school. It might be a little different but I basically: Gave an outline of what I wanted to do for my MA (research interests, a little bit of critical engagement), said the knowledge I have gained from my undergrad (I took such and such classes and such and such area), and said why I wanted to go to the school I was applying to. I applied for two scholarships that needed a letter of intent and I basically said the same thing. What is the scholarship that you are applying to?
