Hyphens and Semi-colons - March 27th 2012, 12:33 PM

I don't understand when to use a hyphen or a semi-colon :| I've googled it and I still don't get it.

Could you give me a few examples where you'd use a semi-colon and where you wouldn't?

Also, how would I know when a word needs a hyphen? does bi-sexual? does ex-girlfriend? does semi-colon? , does hedge-clippers? does bad-mannered? :|

A semicolon connects two independent clauses.
Like this:
"My mom has a lot of hair; she loves to comb it."
Both clauses could stand alone without the other one, get it?

I don't really know how to explain a hyphen, but here's a link to a website that will.
