Sharks and peoples fear of not surfing -
April 17th 2011, 02:34 AM
Does anyone on here use sharks as a reason as to why they wouldn't surf even if they really want to?

No. The only reason I don't surf is because I'm very un-coordinated so I probably would get really hurt. Haha

I boogey-board, which isn't the same as surfing in the sense that I don't go further out in the ocean. There have been times where I've had to go out to catch a wave, but I've been in deep enough watch for some sharks. I know that as a surfer and boogeyboarder, it's important to look towards the ocean to spot fins. On two occasions, I have boogey-boarded and was able to spot fins rising from the surface -- but the fins belonged to dolphins (which were literally almost 20 feet from me), and the other was from dolphins also.
If you want to go surfing, you need to go with someone else. Shark attacks are rare, but you have to keep in mind that there's lifeguards and there would be someone there in case something bad happens. If you don't have any blood coming out of your body, then you probably won't attract a shark, so always keep that in mind also. I would start boogeyboarding and work your way to surfing because surfing requires you go out further. Once you feel comfortable going a certain distance, you can work towards going a father distance. Always keep your eye out and if you really feel uncomfortable, try to find a way to carry an easily accessible knife. |

I love surfing. It took a while for me to get back on the board after nearly drowning myself a while back but that was me being stupid
never do a dare involving a board. However I would never use sharks as an excuse not to surf. Then again we don't have many sharks here, if any? I just realized how badly informed I am about this as a surfer

I'm terrified of sea weed, never mind sharks. That's why I don't really go out too deep in the sea. I never go further than waist high.

Sharks? No, I like sharks. I'm more afraid of falling and drowning rather than sharks. I'm not a strong swimmer so that's the reason I'd never go surfing.

You're more likely to be killed by a cow than a shark.

Personally, I'm not afraid of sharks. I have heard that sharks mistake surfers for turtles the way they paddle out to sea, but I'm not 100% on this. I'd be more afraid or crashing into rocks, or getting tangled in underwater plants, or drowning. Plus, I'm hydrophobic, so surfing just isn't for me.

You're more likely to be killed by a vending machine than a shark attack. Yet we have machines everywhere, they deliver soda and snacks to our school children! That's incredibly dangerous!!
Something needs to be done about it, I'm dead serious. My proposal? Sharks. ![]() Take me seriously. I dare you. |
