Working Out - April 23rd 2011, 05:52 PM

Hey. I was wondering is it best to do my cardiovascular exercise (running, cycling, etc.) before I lift weights? I've been doing this recently, and I was just wondering if this was the most effective way to do things. I'm only lifting 30kg by the way, as I'm in stamina training for track, so I just do more reps rather than adding on more weight. Also I don't currently have a weight bench. Is it worth my while investing in one? Or should I just stick to the circuit of non-bench related exercises I have for now? Thanks.

Hi Luke,

Based on what I've heard, if you were looking to build muscle, then lift weights about once or twice a week. When people lift weights, muscle is broken down, and it is only when your body rests that it gets rebuilt. Therefore, it is important to rest if you want to build muscles. But, since you are doing stamina training, it may be better to do cardiovascular exercise first, followed by weight lifting.

If you are more interested in cardiovascular exercises and endurance, then there's probably no need to invest in a weight bench at this point.

Those are my thoughts, but there are lots of theories out there, and it might be helpful to speak to someone who has studied biology to a higher level, or to have a chat with a personal trainer.

Good luck with your working out!

Best wishes,
Halcyon

Thanks for the advice Halcyon! It's good to see that there's a second opinion supporting my theory that the cardio is probably best done first before the weights. I just got a cheap second hand bench that is in good condition, that will do perfectly. If anyone has any tips, feel free to post them here.
