Chess? - July 1st 2011, 01:01 AM

(For those of you who are wondering: yes, chess is considered a sport!)

Just wondering who on TH enjoys playing; and if you study it at all, what's your favorite opening? When white, I enjoy the Sicilian (never really had the audacity to try the Queen's Gambit, but it is spectacular), and I prefer playing the King's Indian Defense while black.

I was actually finishing up a few online games just about now.

I was trained in the French and Nimzo-Indian. Both are fairly simple to play, I find.

Statistically Sicilian and King's Indian are the openings with the best success rate as black, though I really really dislike the King's Indian until I have enough opening theory to back up on.

I enjoy playing it, but I've never been serious about it, so I just know the basics.

Nothing in the world is
the way it ought to be.
It's harsh, and cruel.

But that's why there's us - champions.
Doesn't matter where we come from,
what we've done or suffered,
or even if we make a difference.

We live as though the
world is as it should be,
to show it what it can be.

I can play and occasionally play, but usually only to prove to my grandad that i am better than him at chess

I love playing it but I am not serious about it at all, I treat it like any other bored game and do not have tactics, I normally start by moving my pawn forward so my queen and bishop can move... that or I move the knight

Very nice, I often default to the Nimzo-Indian as well. I don't have that much knowledge about the French. What's funny in my case is that when I started playing without any theory, I would play the same opening, and when I learned about openings and strategy, I found that it was the King's Indian and got the hang of it. xD Lately I'm trying to switch things up though; I recently got a book on the Benko (kind of old, but not forgotten) and I'll be chewing through that soon.

xD It's always fun when you beat an elder. Haha, I remember when I first beat my chess coach (who'd taught me chess, and had been playing for over 40 years, while I'd only been playing for 1)...he didn't talk to me for 2 weeks!
