Just curious.
Upon starting at SAIC I noticed the immense population of concept art... I'd like to say I'm unsure how I feel about them, but I'm pretty sure the answer is conflicted. I myself am a fine artist and feel oddly confused how performance/sole conceptualism can match up.... so.....? |

Hi DiAnna!!
I hope you're having a super fine day!! MY definition of art is anything created for the sole purpose of stirring within us an emotional response. And given the fact that you are indeed having an emotional response tells me the those 'conceptual artists' have successfully met the requirements. That said.... I understand what you're saying. Given that you have a more specifically defined idea of what constitutes 'art' - it stands to reason that it would be difficult for you to go beyond those ideas and embrace as fully and as openly those things created by the conceptual artists as you would to accept what might come from the someone considered a 'fine artist'. But I think - given time - you might be surprised by what you SEE hidden within [some] conceptual art. For ALL art stems from something within us - and it is that fact alone that creates a bond linking all forms of art. How was THAT for an answer?! LOL ![]() GREAT BIG HUG Craig!! Accepting conceptual art, is when I really began to accept art
. I used to joke around, talk as people do, who genuinely DO enjoy art, but without any knowledge or real understanding. I hate to make this sound like some spiritual sort of thing, its really not, but although i can't place the piece that I first made me see conceptual art as art, I know it did evoke a feeling, and a strong one. Since the my photography has meant a lot more to me, but it was that initial understanding I needed. No offense, but in terms of art but if by fine art you mean exquisitely detailed paintings and the likes, I don't so much enjoy those anymore. I used to until one day Iw as creating a collage, a huge collage made up of images of my family, resulting in a large image of me. The art teacher came up to me and told me what had taken me literally months, could be done in seconds on a computer! So much for motivation. Since then art for me has been how I see the world, not a copy of what is already there . I'm big on editing photos, adding effects, or just trying to make them fit, and feel 'right'. If you sit there painting a scene, get it perfect... When people look at it, they see what everyone sees, they may ask if its a photo and look at you in shock as you tell them how long it took . I'm not mocking you, but for me art has to be how I want the world to be, or how I see it, not how it is... If they want that, well take a photo .I understand some people do enjoy doing paintings like that, and I think skill like that is truly amazing something I could only dream of. I'm certainly not a string person drawing, painting or using pastels, my medium is digital and creating the world through my eyes as I see fit. If conceptual artists are doing that I fully support them! How can one love themselves, when they love absolutely nothing? Do something that is interesting. If it is not interesting, find out why it is not interesting. |

I love conceptual art. It just litters the place nowadays. I've seen some really cool pieces. Like a globe with warning tape all over it, presenting the idea that the world can be dangerous... Or a glass with razorblades in it, maybe saying that alcohol is poison. Yow know what I mean?

thanks for the input
tk338 : "No offense, but in terms of art but if by fine art you mean exquisitely detailed paintings and the likes," I don't mean this... fine art just means using traditional techniques/materials such as painting, sculpture, etc...abstract work can be "fine-art" I'm talking about stuff like Chris Burden. If you're not familiar with him, he did the "Volkswagen crucifixion", which is where he nailed himself to a car, opened is garage for a few minutes/closed it and that was his art. I mean these sort of non-tangible pieces.....where only a few people may see them and that's all. (sorry idk how to do the quote thing) ![]() All art is conceptual, like the glass with razor blades/etc.... but the type of conceptual artist I know and am speaking about are the people who will stand under a tinted light and burp and call that their piece. Personally, I don't care much for it. I've seen pieces I like, but it shouldn't be grouped into the same category as fine art. |

Your welcome
![]() Sorry for the attack on painters xD Sorry I haven't really done art for about 6 months, and I assumed fine art... Painter, for some reason :s I hadn't heard of Chris Burden but his stuff looks pretty cool, quite some self sacrifice too! Thing is however if it weren't for galleries accepting some of the well known pieces, no one would see them, and millions of pieces of art art rarely seen by many people, and I guess even fewer people his. But I kind of like the idea his piece was that, exclusive... If you know what I mean .Occasionally I will come across a piece that simply doesn't interest me however, of conceptual art, ie. standing under a tinted light and burping , but even then although I'm sure you don't, I don't think people have the right not too call it art! Its their piece!Ooh and to do the quote thing, just click quote on the bottom right of the post that you want to quote .
