Packing! - October 10th 2012, 12:21 PM

Feel free to move this, I wasn't sure where to put it.

I'm off on holiday to England on Friday for the school holidays, so obviously I have some packing to do. Thing is, I'm really, really, insanely bad at packing. For example, I'm going Friday-Friday so logically I could say a couple of pairs of jeans, 7 t-shirts, plus a couple extra just in case (and maybe one nice one in case we go out somewhere nice), and some underwear. Makes sense, yeah?
When I pack, it's like "Right, 7 t-shirts, and maybe 4 extra would do. And I love this one so I'll put that in too. Okay so if we put in 2 pairs of jeans, and I'll be wearing some while travelling, that's fine. I do like that little skirt, I'll put it in just in case. That means I need leggings to go with that, actually, I might as well put in my shorts as well if I have the leggings there. And a couple of long tops to go with that. Second thought, better pack 2 pairs to be safe."
I'm going for a week and I know by the time I'm done packing I could stay for a fortnight and still have extra.
I'm the same with other things, like deciding I might need things to put my hair back despite the fact I NEVER tie back my hair. Or putting in makeup that I never wear anyway. It just gets out of control.
How can I prevent this from happening? Most of the time I can barely get my case shut because I cram it full of shit I don't even need.

Throw those curtains wide

First of all, I've moved this to lifestyle - travel & moving since I feel it's more fit there.

Anyways, I'd say pack necessities first. For example, bathroom supplies, shoes, underwear, etc. I typically make a list ahead of time of stuff I should pack, then I stick strictly to that list. Pick clothes based on the weather, then always bring a backup, but not a ton (for example if it's warm weather, pack for that, but bring jeans & a jacket just in case). That type of thing. That's basically helped me a ton with narrowing down what I should pack. I also try to be realistic & be like "if I pack this, am I really going to wear it at all?"

Hope this helped.

Making a list always helps me. If you write down necessities first and then a couple extras to bring just in case it can help you to stay organized so that you won't end up accidentally packing more than you need.
You should also take into account whether you'll have access to a washing machine while you are down there. If so, then only pack what you need and don't pack any extras.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I'm TERRIBLE at packing. But eventually I usually have to make myself plan my outfits in advance (which I'm also terrible at) and limit myself to that. When I actually have the self control to follow through with it and not cram 6,703 things in my suitcase, it actually works out quite nicely, and is much less of a hassle to unpack, too.

Have a blast on vacay!
