In what countries is thumbs up offensive? -
December 13th 2009, 01:27 AM
Title, basically. I found some websites but none were very specific. Apparently thumbs up is offensive in Iran, parts of Italy, and South America. Does anyone happen to know specifically? I travel a lot and I tend to give people thumbs up often, especially if I can't understand them. I was in Mexico recently and apparently it wasn't offensive there, so I'm specifically wondering about Central America. I'm going to Jamaica in a week so does anyone know about there?

People are going to treat you nice if you treat them nice. Also depending on the specific area you go in the country. I'm going to use Mexico as an example since you've been there and I live here.
I don't know where you went but if you go to Mexico City people there tend to be "nice" they are educated and want your money. But try going to Guerrero, people there will literary chase you with their machete if they don't like you.(True story) They are always fighting with the government and are never in peace. It really depends what area you go to. Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it. |

I'm not really sure specifically what areas would find that offensive. Maybe you could just not give the thumbs up and smile instead or something along those lines. That way you wouldn't have to worry about offending anyone
